Why candidates fail RBI Assistant
Hundreds of seats draw lakhs of applicants, pushing Mains cut-offs far higher than IBPS Clerk, 'clerk-level' preparation alone falls short.
They treat sectional timing lightly, Mains locks each of five sections separately across 135 minutes, and a slow section can't be rescued elsewhere.
Computer Knowledge (40 Mains marks) and the Language Proficiency Test are left for the last week, when both need steady, spread-out practice.
How RBI Assistant is actually structured
RBI Assistant has two online phases plus a qualifying language check. Prelims is a 60-minute, 100-mark screening test with 20-minute sectional timing, qualifying only. Mains is a tougher, 135-minute, 200-mark test across five sections including a dedicated Computer Knowledge paper, also with sectional timing. Candidates who clear both then sit a qualifying Language Proficiency Test in the local language of their recruiting office. Both objective papers carry 0.25 negative marking, and final merit is built from Mains marks alone.

What is the salary of an RBI Assistant?
The starting basic pay is ₹29,000 per month, with initial gross emoluments of approximately ₹58,000 (excluding HRA where bank accommodation is provided). With allowances, RBI Assistant pays clearly more than clerk posts in commercial banks like SBI or IBPS-participating banks.
RBI Assistant vs SBI Clerk - which is better?
RBI Assistant generally pays more, has central-bank prestige, regulated working hours and excellent perks, but offers far fewer vacancies (hundreds vs thousands) and appears less frequently. SBI Clerk offers more seats and state-wise postings. The syllabus overlaps heavily, so most aspirants prepare for both.
Is RBI Assistant tougher than IBPS Clerk?
The paper difficulty is comparable, but effective competition is tougher, a few hundred vacancies attract lakhs of applicants, pushing cut-offs very high. The Mains adds sectional timing and a dedicated Computer Knowledge section, so preparation must be broader.
What is the eligibility for RBI Assistant?
A bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks (pass class for SC/ST/PwBD), age 20-28 years with standard category relaxations, and proficiency in the language of the state of the recruiting office.
How many attempts are allowed in RBI Assistant?
There is no fixed cap on attempts for fresh candidates within the age limit, but candidates who have already worked in RBI as Assistant/clerical staff are not eligible to reapply. The practical limit is the 20-28 age window with relaxations.
Is there an interview for RBI Assistant?
No. Selection is through the Prelims (qualifying), the Mains (merit-deciding), and a qualifying Language Proficiency Test in the local language of the recruiting office. There is no interview round.
Is there negative marking in RBI Assistant?
Yes. 0.25 marks (one-fourth) are deducted for each wrong answer in both the Prelims and Mains objective papers. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.
Do Prelims marks count in the final merit?
No. The Preliminary exam is only a qualifying screening. The final merit list is prepared office-wise from Mains marks, subject to qualifying the LPT.
Can an RBI Assistant become an officer?
Yes. Assistants can be promoted to officer cadre through internal channels and departmental exams, and many also clear the RBI Grade B direct-recruitment exam, the work environment at RBI supports this path well.
How long does it take to prepare for RBI Assistant?
4-6 months of structured preparation is typical: concepts and sectional speed first, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge running daily in parallel, and full mocks in the final 6-8 weeks.
