IRDAI Surveyor- Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation
Become a licensed professional who inspects and validates insurance claims across India.
An Insurance Surveyor & Loss Assessor is a licensed professional who investigates, quantifies and validates losses on insurance claims - no claim above the prescribed limit can be settled without a licensed surveyor's report. The profession is regulated by IRDAI under the Insurance Act 1938, with the pre-licensing exam conducted by the Insurance Institute of India (III) and membership held with IIISLA. Candidates enrol with IRDAI as Trainee Surveyors, pass the exams, complete practical training, and apply for the full licence.

Exam Pattern
The pathway has two assessment stages. First, a Trainee Surveyor enrolled with IRDAI takes the III Pre-Licensing Examination - an online MCQ test. Candidates must clear the compulsory common paper (S-01, Principles and Practice of Insurance and Survey) plus at least one of the seven departmental papers, with up to about 3 subjects per session. The passing standard is 60%, with no negative marking. The exam is held four times a year (March, June, September, December); the fee is around ₹500 per subject plus a one-time registration fee. After passing, the trainee completes roughly 12 months of practical training under a licensed surveyor (or an approved institutional programme), then clears a Final Practical Test before the full licence is granted.

Career Roles & Salary
Trainee Surveyor (Student / Enrolled)
Stipend / nil to ~₹15,000–25,000 per month

Licensed Surveyor & Loss Assessor (independent practice)

Fellow Member / Corporate (Firm) Surveyor
Firm revenue: ~₹15–50 lakh+ per year
Senior surveyors advance to IIISLA Fellow membership or run a licensed corporate surveyor firm handling large, complex and multi-location claims and insurer retainers.
In-house Claims / Surveyor Roles at Insurers & TPAs
~₹4–12 lakh per year (salaried)
Some qualified surveyors take salaried claims-management, loss-control or survey coordination roles with insurers, brokers, reinsurers or TPAs.

IRDAI Surveyor FAQ
Who can become an insurance surveyor and loss assessor?
Any Indian citizen aged 18 or above with at least a graduate degree can start the path. Technical qualifications (engineering, architecture, law, accountancy or an insurance qualification) are especially valuable for the more technical departments like Marine Hull or Engineering.
Is a specific degree mandatory?
A graduate degree in any discipline is the baseline. Relevant technical or professional qualifications improve your eligibility and competence for departments such as Motor, Engineering and Marine Hull, but are not needed for every department.
How many papers do I have to pass?
You must clear the compulsory common paper (S-01) plus at least one of the seven departmental papers (Fire, Motor, Marine Cargo, Marine Hull, Engineering, Miscellaneous, Loss of Profit) to be licensed. You can add more departments later by passing their papers.
How often is the surveyor exam held and what does it cost?
The III pre-licensing exam is held four times a year - March, June, September and December - with enrolment windows announced before each session. The fee is around ₹500 per subject plus a one-time registration fee of about ₹500.
What is the passing mark, and is the exam difficult?
You need 60% in each paper, with no negative marking - a higher bar than agent exams like IC-38. S-01 is conceptual while departmental papers are technical, so structured preparation and plenty of MCQ practice matter.
How long is the trainee/training period?
After passing the exam you complete roughly 12 months of practical training under a licensed surveyor (an approved institutional programme is an alternative route). The whole journey must finish within 3 years of enrolment.
How do surveyors earn - is it a salary?
Licensed surveyors are independent professionals who earn fees per survey - a minimum of around ₹5,000 for small claims, scaling with claim value. Established surveyors typically earn several lakhs to ₹15 lakh+ a year; some instead take salaried in-house roles at insurers or TPAs.
What is the difference between a trainee surveyor and a licensed surveyor?
A Trainee Surveyor works under a licensed surveyor to gain experience and sit the exams, but cannot independently sign survey reports. A Licensed Surveyor & Loss Assessor holds the full IRDAI licence, independently conducts and certifies surveys, and is empanelled by insurers.
Surveyor vs insurance agent (IC-38) - which is better?
Different professions. An IC-38 agent sells insurance for commissions, with a 35% pass mark and no degree needed. A surveyor assesses claims for professional fees, needing a degree, a 60% pass mark and ~12 months of training - a longer path, but a technical practice with no selling.
Is IIISLA membership compulsory?
Yes - trainees take IIISLA Student Membership before the pre-licensing exam, and the certificate is required with the licence application. Tiers (Student, Associate, Fellow) track seniority.
How long is the surveyor licence valid?
Historically renewable every 3 years. IRDAI's recent amendments move towards perpetual registration with periodic fees - check the latest IRDAI notification when you apply.
How should I prepare for the surveyor pre-licensing exam in 2026?
Start with the S-01 common paper - insurance principles, surveyor regulations and report writing - then go deep on your department's technical syllabus. Since the pass mark is 60%, drill topic-wise MCQs and take timed free mock tests on PrepClever until you consistently score above 70%.
