Stage 1
Office Assistant (Multipurpose)
~₹33,000–37,000/month in-hand (basic ₹20,700)
The clerical/frontline cadre at an RRB branch - customer service, cash, passbooks, account opening and day-to-day transactions. Growth is via internal promotion to Officer Scale I. No interview at entry; selection on the Main exam alone.
Stage 2
Officer Scale I - Assistant Manager
~₹57,000–61,000/month in-hand (basic ₹48,480)
Entry-level officer cadre managing branch operations, credit, and staff supervision. First rung of the officer ladder with structured promotion to Scale II and Scale III.
Stage 3
Officer Scale II - Manager (General / Specialist)
~₹65,000–70,000/month in-hand (basic ₹63,840)
Middle-management officer overseeing larger branches or specialist functions (IT, Law, CA, Agriculture, Marketing, Treasury). Requires a graduate degree plus relevant experience.
Stage 4
Officer Scale III - Senior Manager
~₹78,000–85,000/month in-hand (basic ₹76,010)
Senior officer heading a large branch or a regional/area function, responsible for business development and administration across multiple branches.

Education
Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university (all posts). Some Officer Scale II specialist posts (IT, CA, Law, Marketing, Agriculture) require a relevant degree/professional qualification plus experience. Officer Scale III requires graduation with a minimum aggregate plus ~5 years' banking/finance experience.
Age
Office Assistant: 18–28 years · Officer Scale I: 18–30 · Officer Scale II: 21–32 · Officer Scale III: 21–40. Standard relaxations apply (SC/ST +5, OBC +3, PwBD +10, ex-servicemen).
Nationality
Indian citizen. Applicants must be proficient (read, write and speak) in the official/local language of the state/RRB applied for - a mandatory, post-agnostic requirement verified during/after the exam.
How the IBPS RRB is structured
IBPS RRB runs different selection tracks per cadre within one recruitment. Office Assistant (Multipurpose) has a qualifying Preliminary exam (80 questions/80 marks/45 min) followed by a 200-mark Main exam; there is NO interview, and selection is on the Main exam alone. Officer Scale I follows the same Prelims → Mains structure but adds a 100-mark Interview, with final merit from Mains + Interview (80:20). Officer Scale II and III skip prelims - a single Main exam (200 marks) followed by an Interview (100 marks). Prelims scores are only qualifying. Every objective paper carries 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer, and candidates choose English or Hindi as one Mains section.

How to crack the IBPS RRB
Register & apply online at ibps.in
Watch for the annual CRP RRB notification (typically June–August). Register, upload photo/signature/thumb impression and handwritten declaration, choose your post(s) and preferred state/RRB, pay the fee (~₹850 General/OBC; ~₹175 SC/ST/PwBD), and submit within the ~3-week window.
Download admit card & sit the Preliminary exam
Applies to Office Assistant and Officer Scale I only. Take the 45-minute online prelims (80 marks) - it is qualifying: clear sectional and overall cut-offs to advance; marks don't carry to the final merit. (Scale II/III skip this stage.)
Clear the Main Examination
Shortlisted candidates take the 2-hour, 200-mark online Main exam (five sections including GA and Computer Knowledge). For Office Assistant this is the final selection stage; for all officer scales, Mains carries an 80% weight into the final merit.
Attend the Interview (Officers only)
Officer Scale I, II and III candidates who clear the Mains cut-off attend a 100-mark interview conducted by the RRBs / NABARD panel, contributing 20% to the final merit. Office Assistants have no interview.
Provisional Allotment & Document Verification
Final merit lists are drawn per post, per state, per category. IBPS releases a provisional allotment to a specific RRB; candidates complete document verification and language-proficiency confirmation before the bank issues the joining letter.

Is knowing the local language mandatory for IBPS RRB?
Yes. Unlike IBPS PO/Clerk, RRB recruitment is region-specific - you must be proficient (read, write and speak) in the official/local language of the state whose RRB you apply to. It is verified during or after selection, and failing it can cost you the job regardless of exam score.
How is IBPS RRB different from IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk?
IBPS PO and Clerk recruit for public-sector commercial banks; IBPS RRB recruits for the 28 Regional Rural Banks and mandates local-language proficiency. RRB postings are predominantly rural and semi-urban, the prelims is 45 minutes / 80 marks, and a single RRB notification covers both officer and clerical (Office Assistant) cadres.
Is an interview required for all IBPS RRB posts?
No. Office Assistant (Multipurpose) has NO interview - selection is purely on the Main exam. All officer posts (Scale I, II and III) do have a 100-mark interview, which counts 20% toward final merit (Mains counts 80%).
What is the starting salary for Officer Scale I and Office Assistant?
Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager) starts at a basic of ₹48,480, roughly ₹57,000–61,000/month in-hand. Office Assistant starts at a basic of ₹20,700, roughly ₹33,000–37,000/month in-hand. Actual figures vary by posting location.
Are RRB postings only in rural areas?
Postings are within the operational area of the selected RRB, which is largely rural and semi-urban, though branches also exist in district and some urban centres. You commit to serving that specific state's RRB, so choose your preferred state carefully at application.
Is there negative marking, and do prelims marks count in the final result?
Yes, 0.25 marks (one-fourth) are deducted per wrong answer in every objective paper. The Preliminary exam is only qualifying - its marks do NOT count toward final merit; the final merit is based on the Main exam (Office Assistant) or Mains + Interview (Officers).
