Why candidates fail IBPS SO
They clear Prelims comfortably but treat the 60-mark Professional Knowledge paper as an afterthought, when Mains alone decides 80% of final merit.
IT Officer candidates revise engineering theory but skip its banking application, interviewers specifically probe CBS, UPI and cybersecurity-in-banks scenarios.
Law and Rajbhasha aspirants keep drilling Quantitative Aptitude instead of the banking-focused General Awareness their Prelims actually uses for that stream.
How IBPS SO is actually structured
IBPS SO runs in three stages. A 2-hour, 100-mark Prelims (Reasoning, English and Quantitative Aptitude, or banking-focused General Awareness in place of Quant for Law and Rajbhasha posts) qualifies candidates for Mains, a 45-minute, 60-mark Professional Knowledge paper specific to each post. Prelims marks don't count toward final merit, which is built from Mains (80%) and a 100-mark Interview (20%). Objective papers carry 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer.

What is the salary of an IBPS SO?
Specialist Officers join at Scale-I with a basic pay of ₹48,480. With DA, HRA, CCA and special allowances, gross monthly pay typically works out to roughly ₹60,000-70,000 depending on posting city.
IBPS SO vs SBI SO - what is the difference?
IBPS SO recruits Scale-I specialists for 11 public sector banks through one standardised annual exam. SBI SO recruits for SBI alone, often at multiple scales (Assistant Manager to senior roles), with post-specific ads through the year and sometimes shortlisting plus interview only. Many specialists apply to both.
Is IBPS SO easier than IBPS PO?
Competition in IBPS SO is lower because only candidates with the specific degree can apply, so the applicant pool is far smaller than IBPS PO. However, the Professional Knowledge paper demands genuine command of your subject, generic banking prep alone is not enough.
What is the age limit and attempts for IBPS SO?
20-30 years for General category (OBC +3, SC/ST +5, PwD +10). There is no cap on the number of attempts, you can appear every year while within the age limit.
Which IBPS SO post is the best?
IT Officer is considered the most lucrative given banks' digital-transformation push. Law Officer offers strong job security and courtroom-free legal work. AFO is excellent for candidates from agricultural backgrounds, and vacancies for AFO are usually the highest.
Can a non-engineer apply for IBPS IT Officer?
No. IBPS IT Officer requires a 4-year engineering/technology degree in relevant streams or a graduate degree with specified IT qualifications (MCA and equivalents are eligible). Check the exact qualification list in the notification.
Do Prelims marks count in the final IBPS SO merit?
No. Prelims is qualifying only. Final merit is prepared from the Mains Professional Knowledge score (80%) and the Interview (20%).
Is there an interview in IBPS SO?
Yes. Candidates who clear the Mains cut-off attend a 100-mark interview conducted by the participating banks under IBPS coordination. Minimum qualifying marks apply (typically 40%, relaxed for reserved categories).
How long does it take to prepare for IBPS SO?
If your degree subjects are fresh, 2-3 months of focused revision plus banking-exam practice for Prelims is usually enough, add another month if you have been away from your core subjects. Practice free IBPS SO mock tests and professional-knowledge questions on PrepClever to gauge readiness.
What does ₹349 unlock?
