IBPS SO Exam Pattern: All Three Stages
A standard banking prelims, then a mains unlike any other IBPS exam: one 45-minute paper on your own profession.
IBPS SO selection runs in three stages: a 1-hour preliminary exam, a 45-minute mains consisting of a single post-specific Professional Knowledge paper, and an interview. Prelims covers Reasoning, English, and Quantitative Aptitude for most posts; mains tests only the subject of the post you applied for.
The structure inverts the usual banking-exam shape. In PO and Clerk, mains is the long, multi-section marathon. In SO, mains is one short specialist paper, and that concentration is what makes it decisive.

What Makes This Pattern Unusual
Two things. First, the prelims weighting: Reasoning carries 50 of the 100 marks, double either other section, so a strong reasoning game matters more here than in most banking prelims. Second, the mains: 60 questions in 45 minutes on one professional subject leaves no room for a weak stream. A Law Officer candidate shaky on SARFAESI, or an IT candidate rusty on DBMS, has nowhere in the paper to hide.
After mains comes the interview, which tests both your professional subject as applied to banking and your general fit. The three stages together mean specialist depth, exam speed, and interview presence all get sampled.

Check Your Post's Prelims Composition in the Notification
The prelims section mix varies by post: the Quantitative Aptitude section applies to most posts but not all streams are tested identically. Confirm the exact section composition for your post in the current official notification on ibps.in before finalising a preparation plan.
