Why candidates fail the surveyor exam
They underestimate the 60% pass mark, a much higher bar than agent exams like IC-38, and stop revising once they feel roughly familiar with the material.
They study S-01's general principles well but go into their departmental paper (Fire, Motor or Marine Cargo) without enough technical depth on policy clauses and loss-quantification methods.
They neglect report-writing and documentation questions, assuming the exam is purely conceptual, when survey procedure and evidence questions carry real weight in S-01.
How IRDAI Surveyor is actually structured
The surveyor pathway has two assessment stages. First, a Trainee Surveyor enrolled with IRDAI takes the III Pre-Licensing Examination, an online MCQ test. Candidates must clear the compulsory common paper (S-01, Principles and Practice of Insurance and Survey) plus at least one of the seven departmental papers, with up to about 3 subjects per session. The passing standard is 60% in each paper, with no negative marking, and the exam runs four times a year (March, June, September, December). After passing, the trainee completes roughly 12 months of practical training under a licensed surveyor, then clears a Final Practical Test before the full licence is granted.

Who can become an insurance surveyor and loss assessor?
Any Indian citizen aged 18 or above with at least a graduate degree can start the path. Technical qualifications (engineering, architecture, law, accountancy or an insurance qualification) are especially valuable for departments like Marine Hull or Engineering.
How do surveyors earn, is it a salary?
Licensed surveyors are independent professionals who earn fees per survey, a minimum of around ₹5,000 for small claims, scaling with claim value. Established surveyors typically earn several lakhs to ₹15 lakh+ a year; some instead take salaried in-house roles at insurers or TPAs.
Surveyor vs insurance agent (IC-38), which is harder?
Different professions. An IC-38 agent sells insurance for commissions, with a 35% pass mark and no degree needed. A surveyor assesses claims for professional fees, needing a degree, a 60% pass mark and roughly 12 months of training, a longer path but a technical practice with no selling.
Is a specific degree mandatory to become a surveyor?
A graduate degree in any discipline is the baseline. Relevant technical or professional qualifications improve your eligibility and competence for departments such as Motor, Engineering and Marine Hull, but are not needed for every department.
How long should I prepare for the surveyor pre-licensing exam?
Since the pass mark is 60% with no negative marking, most candidates spend several weeks going deep on S-01 concepts and their chosen department's technical syllabus, drilling topic-wise MCQs and timed free mock tests on PrepClever until they consistently score above 70%.
How many papers do I have to pass?
You must clear the compulsory common paper (S-01) plus at least one of the seven departmental papers (Fire, Motor, Marine Cargo, Marine Hull, Engineering, Miscellaneous, Loss of Profit) to be licensed. Additional departments can be added later.
How often is the surveyor exam held and what does it cost?
The III pre-licensing exam is held four times a year, March, June, September and December, with enrolment windows announced before each session. The fee is around ₹500 per subject plus a one-time registration fee.
How long is the trainee/training period?
After passing the exam you complete roughly 12 months of practical training under a licensed surveyor (an approved institutional programme is an alternative route). The whole journey must finish within 3 years of enrolment.
What is the difference between a trainee and a licensed surveyor?
A Trainee Surveyor works under a licensed surveyor to gain experience and sit the exams, but cannot independently sign survey reports. A Licensed Surveyor & Loss Assessor holds the full IRDAI licence, independently conducts and certifies surveys, and is empanelled by insurers.
What does ₹199 unlock on PrepClever?
Timed mock papers for S-01 plus the Fire, Motor and Marine Cargo departments, topic-wise practice sets, regulation-linked explanations for every question, and unlimited re-attempts, all for a one-time ₹199.
