IRDAI Surveyor Exam Dates and Registration Cycles
Four sessions a year, two training cycles, and one 3-year deadline running underneath all of them.
The IRDAI surveyor pathway does not run on a single annual date. The III pre-licensing examination is held periodically, typically four times a year in March, June, September and December, and the training cycles that follow it sit on their own early-year and mid-year rhythms. That means the useful question is not "what is the date" but "which window am I aiming at, and when does registration for it open".
This page sets out that rhythm, the clocks that start once you enrol, and where the confirmed dates for any given session are actually published. It does not carry a confirmed calendar date, because IRDAI, the Insurance Institute of India and IIISLA announce each cycle themselves and no third-party page should be your source for it.

The Surveyor Calendar, Cycle by Cycle
Four recurring events shape the pathway. The timings below are the published cycles, not dates for any particular sitting.
| Event | When it runs |
|---|---|
| Pre-licensing exam sessions | Periodically, typically 4 times a year (Mar / Jun / Sep / Dec) |
| Fresh Surveyor training (institutional route, NIA Pune) | Early-year cycle (for example Feb to Mar) |
| Additional-department training | Mid-year cycle (for example Jul to Aug) |
| Final Practical Test | Scheduled after each training cycle |
How Often the Exam Runs, and What That Costs You
Four sessions a year sounds generous until you map it against the pass standard. Each paper is 100 questions for 100 marks and needs 60% to clear, with no negative marking. Miss that bar and the next chance is roughly a quarter away, not a week.
You can attempt up to about three subjects in a single session, and you may sit multiple sessions, so a partial pass is not a reset. Clearing the compulsory S-01 paper in one sitting and your departmental paper in the next is a legitimate route. It simply spends time from the window described below.
The clock that matters most is the 3-year window
The whole journey from trainee enrolment with IRDAI to the grant of the licence must be completed within 3 years of enrolment. Every exam session you spend, and the roughly 12 months of practical training, come out of that same window. Plan backwards from it rather than treating each session as a fresh start.
The Order the Dates Arrive In
The sequence is fixed even when the calendar is not. Knowing which stage you are at tells you which window to watch.
- 1
Trainee enrolment with IRDAI
Enrolment happens on your own timeline, not on a national cycle. It is the event that starts the 3-year completion clock, so enrol when you are ready to study, not months before.
- 2
IIISLA student membership
Student membership of IIISLA must be in place before you can appear for the pre-licensing examination, so it has to be settled well ahead of the session you are targeting.
- 3
Pre-licensing examination session
Held periodically, typically four times a year in March, June, September and December. Registration for each session opens ahead of it and is announced by the conducting bodies.
- 4
Practical training cycle
Roughly 12 months under a licensed surveyor, with quarterly training records submitted to IRDAI. The institutional route through NIA Pune runs on an early-year cycle for fresh surveyors and a mid-year cycle for additional departments.
- 5
Final Practical Test
Scheduled after each training cycle. It is 50 questions for 50 marks, covering practical survey work, loss assessment and report writing.
- 6
Licence grant, then renewal
The fresh licence application goes to IRDAI with your IIISLA membership certificate. Once granted, the licence runs on a 3-year renewal cycle, with an individual renewal fee of about ₹1,000 and late fees if you miss it.
The next session is months away. Start now, free.
When Registration Opens for a Session
Registration for each pre-licensing session opens ahead of that session rather than on a fixed annual date, and the window is announced by the conducting bodies. Because the sessions recur roughly quarterly, the practical habit is to check the official portals at the start of each quarter rather than waiting for a notification you may not see.
The same applies to the training cycles. The fresh surveyor programme sits in the early-year window and the additional-department programme in the mid-year window, but the exact intake dates for any cycle are published by the institution running it.
On results
No fixed result interval is published for the pre-licensing examination, so this page does not quote one. Results for a session are released by the Insurance Institute of India after that session, and the session result notice on the official portal is the authoritative word on timing.
Where to Confirm the Current Dates
Three bodies share this pathway, and each publishes a different part of the calendar. Check all three before you plan a sitting.
- checkIRDAI: trainee enrolment rules, the licence application process and the renewal cycle.
- checkInsurance Institute of India (III): the pre-licensing examination sessions, registration windows and results.
- checkIIISLA: student and professional membership, plus the training and Final Practical Test cycles.
- checkThe institution running your training route, for its intake dates in the early-year or mid-year cycle.
Planning a Realistic Target Session
Pick the session you can be ready for, then work backwards. You need S-01 and at least one departmental paper at 60% each, and both can be attempted in the same sitting since up to about three subjects are allowed per session. Preparing for both together is the cheapest use of the 3-year window.
If your enrolment is already in place, count the remaining time in that window against roughly 12 months of training plus the Final Practical Test, and let what is left decide how many exam sessions you can afford to spend.
FAQs
How often is the IRDAI surveyor exam held?expand_more
The III pre-licensing examination is held periodically, typically four times a year, in March, June, September and December. The exact dates for any session are announced by the conducting bodies.
When does registration open for a surveyor exam session?expand_more
Registration opens ahead of each session rather than on a fixed annual date, and the window is announced by the Insurance Institute of India. Because sessions recur roughly quarterly, checking the official portal each quarter is more reliable than waiting for a notice.
How many papers can I take in one session?expand_more
Up to about three subjects per session. You must clear the compulsory S-01 paper plus at least one of the seven departmental papers, each 100 questions for 100 marks, at 60% with no negative marking.
When does the surveyor training run?expand_more
The institutional fresh surveyor training runs on an early-year cycle, for example February to March, and additional-department training on a mid-year cycle, for example July to August. Practical training under a licensed surveyor runs for roughly 12 months.
When is the Final Practical Test held?expand_more
It is scheduled after each training cycle. The test is 50 questions for 50 marks, covering practical survey, loss assessment and report writing, and it precedes the licence application.
Is there a deadline to finish the whole process?expand_more
Yes. The journey from trainee enrolment with IRDAI to the grant of the licence must be completed within 3 years of enrolment. After the licence is granted, it is renewed every 3 years, with an individual renewal fee of about ₹1,000 and late fees for a missed renewal.
Does this page list confirmed exam dates?expand_more
No. It sets out the recurring cycles, which are stable, and points to the official portals of IRDAI, the Insurance Institute of India and IIISLA, where the confirmed dates for a given session are published.
