Surveyor Training, Final Test and Licence
Passing the exam starts a clock, not a career. The training year, the final test, and the licence that follows.
After passing the surveyor pre-licensing exam, three stages remain: roughly 12 months of practical training under a licensed surveyor, the Final Practical Test, and the licence application to IRDAI. Only then does a trainee become a Licensed Surveyor and Loss Assessor, able to independently conduct and certify surveys.
This back half of the pathway gets a fraction of the attention the exam gets, and it is where the calendar is actually spent. Here is what each stage involves, and what maintaining the licence takes afterwards.

Arrange practical training
Roughly 12 months under a licensed surveyor in your department, or an approved institutional programme such as NIA Pune. Finding a senior willing to train you is your task, not IRDAI's, which is why the departments page lists local training supply as a factor in department choice.
- 2
Maintain records and file quarterly reports
Training records are kept throughout, with quarterly training reports submitted to IRDAI. Treat the paperwork as part of the training; gaps surface at licence time.
- 3
Clear the Final Practical Test
A post-training online MCQ assessment of 50 questions for 50 marks covering practical survey work, loss assessment and report writing: the applied version of what the training year taught.
- 4
Apply to IRDAI for the licence
A fresh surveyor licence application, submitted with your IIISLA membership certificate. On approval you hold the IRDAI Surveyor & Loss Assessor licence.
Everything Above Must Fit Inside 3 Years
The whole journey, from trainee enrolment through exam, training and final test to licence, must be completed within 3 years of enrolment. The training alone is roughly 12 months, so exam retakes and slow training arrangements both spend a budget that does not refill.
The exam comes before any of this. See its questions free.
Holding the Licence, Long Term
| Obligation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Licence renewal | Every 3 years; individual renewal fee around ₹1,000, with late fees for delay |
| Membership progression | Upgrade IIISLA membership from Student toward Associate and Fellow as experience grows |
| Adding departments | Pass additional departmental papers to extend the licence's scope |
What the Training Year Is Actually For
The exam proves you know the rules; the training year teaches the judgement the rules cannot carry. Site inspections, cause-of-loss reasoning, quantum negotiation, and above all report writing, since a surveyor's report is the product insurers pay for and the document no large claim settles without.
A trainee cannot independently sign survey reports; a licensed surveyor can. That signature is what the 12 months, the quarterly reports and the final test exist to earn. What the signature earns, in fees, is the career and earnings page's subject.
