IRDAI Surveyor Previous Year Papers
Recalled question sets are not past papers. The published syllabus is the closest honest substitute, and it is better than people think.
If you came looking for a PDF of IRDAI surveyor previous year question papers with answers, the straight answer is that no official archive of past papers is published for this exam. The pre-licensing examination is an online computer-based MCQ test, the question set is not released afterwards, and there is no official answer key to go with it.
What does exist is more useful than most people expect: a fully published syllabus, a fixed and well-documented paper structure, and a pass standard you can practise against. This page explains what circulates under the "previous year paper" label, how much weight to give it, and what to work through instead.

There is no official past paper archive for the surveyor exam
Nothing is published as an official past question paper or answer key for the III pre-licensing examination, for S-01 or for any of the seven departmental papers. Files offered elsewhere as "actual surveyor papers" are at best candidate recollections typed up after a sitting. This page will not reproduce, host or link to that material, and will not call it official.
Why Recalled Papers Circulate, and How Far to Trust Them
Because the exam runs only periodically, typically four sessions a year, candidates who sit it are a small and scattered group. The question sets that appear online afterwards are reconstructions from memory, usually partial, often reworded, and sometimes carrying an answer that is simply wrong. Nobody is holding an original to check them against.
Used carefully, they are a rough guide to phrasing and difficulty. Used as a shortcut, they are worse than useless, because an incorrect answer key teaches you a wrong rule that you then defend confidently in the exam. Verify every answer against the Insurance Act, the surveyor regulations or the department's technical material before you accept it.
The Pattern Your Practice Should Match
Practice is only a substitute for a past paper if it copies the real shape. The full breakdown is on the exam pattern page; this is enough to calibrate against.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Mode | Online, computer-based, MCQ |
| Compulsory paper | S-01: Principles and Practice of Insurance and Survey, 100 questions, 100 marks |
| Departmental paper | At least one of seven, 100 questions, 100 marks each |
| Pass mark | 60% in each paper |
| Negative marking | None |
| Subjects per session | Up to about 3 |
| Final Practical Test | 50 questions, 50 marks, after training |

What Actually Repeats: the Syllabus, Not the Questions
Chasing recalled questions assumes questions recur. What recurs in a licensing exam is the ground the syllabus covers, because that ground is what a surveyor has to know on the job. S-01 will always test the principles of insurance, the Insurance Act 1938 and the IRDAI Surveyors and Loss Assessors Regulations, the code of conduct, survey and loss assessment procedure, report writing and evidence, policy interpretation, and the basics of reinsurance and claims settlement.
The same holds inside each department. A Motor paper has to test the Motor Vehicles Act and third-party liability, own damage against liability cover, accident inspection, the repair versus total loss judgement, IDV and depreciation, and theft and fraud indicators. Those are not predictions. They are the published syllabus, and they are a better guide to what you will face than anyone's recollection of one sitting.
Departmental Ground to Practise Against
The seven departmental papers, each in a line. Build your own question sets from these headings rather than hunting for a paper that is not published.
- Fire
- Standard Fire and Special Perils policy, perils and exclusions, fire risk inspection and loss investigation, under-insurance and the average clause, add-on covers and reinstatement value, loss quantification and salvage.
- Motor
- Motor Vehicles Act and third-party liability, own damage against liability cover, accident inspection and cause of loss, repair against total or constructive total loss, IDV, depreciation and salvage assessment, theft and fraud indicators.
- Marine Cargo
- Marine Insurance Act 1963, Institute Cargo Clauses A, B and C, transit risks, general average and particular average, cargo loss survey and quantum assessment, subrogation and recovery, and documentation such as the bill of lading, invoice and packing list.
- Marine Hull
- Hull and machinery insurance, Institute Time and Voyage Clauses, vessel damage survey and repairs, total loss, sue and labour and collision liability, Protection and Indemnity basics, classification societies and seaworthiness.
- Engineering
- Contractors' All Risks and Erection All Risks, Machinery Breakdown and Boiler and Pressure Plant, Electronic Equipment Insurance, testing and commissioning risks, engineering loss investigation and quantification, depreciation and reinstatement of machinery.
- Miscellaneous
- Burglary, money and fidelity guarantee, liability insurances covering public, product and professional exposures, personal accident and health basics, rural, cattle and crop covers, claim investigation and fraud detection.
- Loss of Profit
- Fire Loss of Profit and business interruption cover, gross profit, indemnity period and rate of gross profit, standing charges and increased cost of working, turnover and the material damage proviso, loss computation and coordination with the material damage claim.
How to Build the Practice a Past Paper Would Have Given You
A past paper is valuable for three things: format familiarity, timing pressure and honest feedback. All three can be recreated without one.
- 1
Copy the shape exactly
Set yourself 100 multiple-choice questions for 100 marks per paper, the real size of both S-01 and each departmental paper, and mark the 60% line before you start.
- 2
Work the syllabus heading by heading
Take one syllabus heading at a time and turn it into questions: a definition, an application, an exception. If you cannot write three questions on a heading, you do not yet know it well enough to answer someone else's.
- 3
Answer everything, always
There is no negative marking, so an unanswered question forfeits a free chance. Practising under that rule builds the habit before the exam rather than during it.
- 4
Score against 60%, not against yourself
Track each paper separately. A strong S-01 does not carry a weak departmental paper, because both must clear 60% independently.
- 5
Verify any recalled question you meet
If you use a memory-based set from elsewhere, treat it as a prompt, not an authority. Trace each answer back to the Act, the regulations or the policy wording before you learn it.
- 6
Repeat under time
Sessions are roughly quarterly, so a wasted attempt costs a season. Timed, scored practice is the only honest test of whether you are ready for the one in front of you.
About the Final Practical Test
The post-training test is a separate assessment of 50 questions for 50 marks on practical survey, loss assessment and report writing. No past papers are published for it either. Your training year, including the quarterly records you keep, is the preparation for it.
FAQs
Are IRDAI surveyor previous year question papers available officially?expand_more
No. No official archive of past question papers or answer keys is published for the III pre-licensing examination, for the compulsory S-01 paper or for any of the seven departmental papers.
Where can I get a surveyor exam question paper with answers PDF?expand_more
There is no official one to get. Files circulating under that name are candidate recollections written up after a sitting, not verified originals, and their stated answers are sometimes wrong. The published syllabus and the exam pattern are the reliable sources to practise against.
Do surveyor exam questions repeat between sessions?expand_more
Not in a way worth planning around. What recurs is the syllabus ground, since S-01 and each departmental paper are built from published topic lists that reflect the work a licensed surveyor actually does.
How should I use a memory-based surveyor question set?expand_more
As a guide to phrasing and difficulty only. Check every answer against the Insurance Act 1938, the IRDAI Surveyors and Loss Assessors Regulations or the relevant policy wording before accepting it, and never rely on a recalled set as your main study material.
What should my practice look like if there are no past papers?expand_more
Match the real format: 100 multiple-choice questions for 100 marks per paper, no negative marking, and a 60% pass line scored separately for S-01 and for your departmental paper.
Are past papers available for the Final Practical Test?expand_more
No. The Final Practical Test is a post-training assessment of 50 questions for 50 marks covering practical survey, loss assessment and report writing, and no past papers are published for it.
