CMA Course Details: What the Qualification Actually Is
A statutory qualification in cost and management accounting: three levels, 20 papers, and exclusive cost-audit rights at the end.
The CMA is a statutory professional qualification conferred by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), set up under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959. It certifies expertise in cost accounting, management accounting, taxation, financial management and audit, and it leads to roles in costing, corporate finance and, ultimately, finance leadership.
Structurally, the course runs across three stages: Foundation with 4 papers, Intermediate with 8 papers split into two groups, and Final with another 8 papers in two groups. Twenty papers in all, each of 100 marks, taken across exam terms held twice a year in June and December. Most candidates complete the journey in 3 to 4 years, including mandatory practical training.

What Makes CMA Different From Other Accounting Qualifications
Two things. First, its statutory standing: the CMA designation is created by an Act of Parliament, and CMAs hold exclusive rights to conduct statutory cost audits in India. No other professional can sign one. Second, its centre of gravity: where a chartered accountant's training leans toward financial reporting and statutory audit, the CMA curriculum is built around cost accounting, management accounting and strategic cost management, the disciplines companies use to decide, price and control.
