IBPS Clerk Eligibility: Who Can Apply
A degree, the right age window, and one requirement that surprises people: proficiency in the posting state's local language.
IBPS Clerk eligibility has three parts: graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, an age between 20 and 28 years with category relaxations, and Indian citizenship. There is a fourth condition that trips up more applicants than the first three combined: reading and writing proficiency in the official local language of the state you apply for.
Each condition is unpacked below, along with what the age window means for how many cycles you realistically have.

The Local-Language Requirement
IBPS Clerk requires working knowledge, reading and writing, of the official language of the state you are applying to. This is not a formality: postings are state-tied, and the requirement exists because clerical work is front-desk work in that language.
Before applying, make sure you are genuinely comfortable reading and writing the language of your chosen state, not just speaking it. Candidates from one state applying to another purely for a perceived easier cut-off should weigh this condition first.
See the question style before you commit to a cycle.
The Age Window
The base window is 20 to 28 years, two years shorter at the top than IBPS PO's. SC/ST candidates get 5 extra years, OBC candidates 3, and PwD candidates 10. Since the exam runs annually, your age at the notification date fixes the number of cycles available to you, worth computing honestly before deciding how much to invest in a single attempt.
The Notification Is the Final Word
Age cut-off dates, category definitions, and language-proficiency rules are set in each year's official IBPS notification and can change between cycles. Confirm every condition on ibps.in before you apply; this page is orientation, not the rulebook.
