How to Prepare for IBPS PO
Prelims is a speed filter, mains is a depth test, and the interview carries 20% of your merit. Each needs its own plan.
IBPS PO preparation is really three separate preparations. Prelims is a speed test with sectional cut-offs, mains is a depth test dominated by Data Interpretation and Banking Awareness, and the interview carries a full 20% of your final merit. A plan that treats the exam as one undifferentiated syllabus tends to over-prepare for prelims and under-prepare for everything that actually decides the rank.
The commonly cited runway for a serious attempt is 3 to 4 months of consistent, structured preparation. Here is how to spend it.

The Phase-Wise Plan
PrepClever's suggested sequence, built around how each phase is scored.
- 1
Clear prelims first: it is a screening test with sectional cut-offs
You need to clear the cut-off in all three sections, not just overall. Useful targets for general category: 21+ in English, 24+ in Reasoning, 20+ in Quant, with an overall aim of 68+. Practise each section against the clock separately before mixing them.
- 2
Make mains DI your daily anchor
Data Interpretation in IBPS PO mains is tough and lengthy, caselet and triple-graph sets included, and it is the section that separates toppers from average scorers. In the last 2 months of prep, work through around 10 DI sets a day.
- 3
Build Banking Awareness as a daily habit, not a cramming block
Read RBI circulars, weekly banking-awareness PDFs, and current-affairs capsules through the whole prep window. Cover static banking thoroughly: types of accounts, RTGS/NEFT limits, CRR, SLR, and the repo rate.
- 4
Give the descriptive paper 30 minutes a day
Practise one essay or one letter daily. Essay topics run toward banking and the economy, digital India, NPAs, cryptocurrency, and letters are formal. Use a fixed structure: introduction, three body points, conclusion.
- 5
Prepare the interview around your own background
The interview is 100 marks and 20% of final merit. Prepare answers for why banking, recent RBI policy changes, current affairs in the banking sector, your personal strengths, and why a public sector bank.
Why the 80:20 Merit Split Should Shape Your Effort
Prelims marks do not count toward the final merit; mains contributes 80% and the interview 20%. So prelims deserves exactly enough preparation to clear its cut-offs comfortably, and not one week more. The candidates who lose out are usually the ones still polishing prelims speed while their Banking Awareness and DI, the mains rank-makers, sit untouched.
A plan built on a guess about your weak section is a guess.
Weekly Rhythm Worth Keeping
A repeatable structure across the 3-4 month window:
- checkTimed sectional practice for prelims sections, rotating daily
- checkDI sets every day in the final two months
- checkBanking awareness reading daily, static banking revision weekly
- checkOne essay or letter draft per day, 30 minutes
- checkA full timed mock at least weekly, reviewed answer by answer
Mock Reviews Are Where the Marks Are
A mock you do not review is a mock wasted. The review, which questions you skipped, which errors were speed versus concept, which DI sets ate your time, is what converts practice into a higher score. Budget as much time for the review as for the attempt.
FAQs
How many months does IBPS PO preparation take?expand_more
Around 3 to 4 months of consistent, structured preparation is the commonly cited requirement for a serious attempt, given the roughly 60:1 competition ratio.
Which section should I prioritise for IBPS PO mains?expand_more
Data Analysis & Interpretation. The DI sets in mains are lengthy and difficult, and this section is what separates top scorers from average ones. Around 10 DI sets a day in the final two months is the working standard.
When should I start preparing Banking Awareness?expand_more
From day one, as a daily habit. It appears only in mains, but the gap between prelims and mains is too short to build current-affairs coverage from scratch, and static banking topics need repeated passes.
How do I prepare for the IBPS PO descriptive test?expand_more
Practise essay and letter writing for about 30 minutes daily. Topics are usually banking and economy related, and a fixed structure of introduction, three body points, and conclusion fits the 30-minute, 25-mark format.
What prelims scores should I target section-wise?expand_more
Useful general-category targets: 21+ in English, 24+ in Reasoning, and 20+ in Quant, with an overall aim of 68 or more. Sectional cut-offs apply, so all three matter individually.
