SBI PO Salary and Career: The Full Ladder
The pay is the pull, the promotion ladder is the real story. Both, with the actual numbers.
An SBI PO starts on a basic pay of ₹48,480, which works out to roughly ₹80,000 to ₹82,000 per month in hand once allowances are added, with a total CTC of around ₹21.97 lakh per year. That figure is the single biggest reason SBI PO draws several lakh applicants for a few hundred posts each cycle.
The salary is only the entry point, though. The PO role is a junior management post with a defined ladder above it, and the ladder is where a banking career's real money and responsibility sit. This page covers both: what you earn on day one, and what the grades above pay.

What Does an SBI PO Actually Do?
A Probationary Officer joins as a JMGS-I Assistant Manager and spends roughly two years on probation. The work spans branch operations, customer relationships, credit and loan processing, cash management and general banking administration. It is a generalist management role by design; the specialisation comes later, with the grades.

In-Hand vs CTC: Read the Right Number
The ~₹21.97 lakh CTC includes allowances, perks and benefits that do not all arrive as monthly cash. The number to plan your finances around is the in-hand figure of roughly ₹80,000-82,000 per month, which itself moves with posting city. Comparing SBI's CTC against a private-sector cash salary overstates the gap.
