SBI PO Study Material: What to Use for Each Section
Four objective sections, one descriptive paper, and far too many books on sale. Here is how to choose.
SBI PO study material splits into four jobs: concept books that teach a section from scratch, practice banks that build speed, current-affairs sources that feed the banking awareness section, and timed mocks that tie it all together. Most candidates over-buy the first category and under-use the last two.
This page does not push a branded book list. It tells you what each section actually demands from material, so you can judge any book or PDF against the exam instead of against its cover.

What Good Quant and DI Material Looks Like
The mains DI sets are the exam's known differentiator, so material must reach that depth:
- check_circleCovers caselet, multi-graph and missing-data DI, not just single-table sets
- check_circleArithmetic chapters end in timed mixed exercises, because the exam never labels a question by chapter
- check_circleIncludes quadratic equations and approximation drills at prelims speed
- check_circleSolutions show the fastest method, not just a correct one
What Good Reasoning Material Looks Like
- check_circlePuzzle and seating-arrangement sets in all four layouts the exam uses: linear, circular, floor and box
- check_circleInput-output and data-sufficiency practice at mains difficulty
- check_circleA computer aptitude section covering fundamentals, MS Office and networking basics, since mains folds it into reasoning
What Good English Material Looks Like
- check_circleReading comprehension passages drawn from economy and banking themes, matching the exam's register
- check_circleError-spotting and sentence-improvement drills with rule references, not answer keys alone
- check_circleVocabulary learned in context via cloze and word-usage exercises rather than isolated word lists

Banking Awareness: A Daily Source Beats a Big Book
The mains General/Economy/Banking Awareness section rewards a daily habit over any single volume. The syllabus scope is current affairs from roughly the last six months, RBI and monetary policy, government schemes, budget highlights and static banking concepts. A static book ages out of half that scope by exam day.
Pick one daily current-affairs source and one weekly banking-awareness compilation, and stay loyal to them. Switching sources mid-preparation costs more than any single source's gaps do.
Descriptive Paper Material
The 30-mark descriptive test needs model essays and letters on recent banking and economy themes plus regular typed practice, since the paper is typed, not handwritten. Reading model answers without writing your own transfers almost nothing; the material is only as good as the weekly writing habit attached to it.
Free Material Covers More of This Exam Than Most Candidates Expect
Prelims-level practice questions, current-affairs compilations and syllabus-mapped topic drills are all available free, including on PrepClever. Where paid material earns its price is mains-difficulty DI and puzzle banks and full timed mocks with honest scoring. Spend there, not on a fifth concept book.
Study Material FAQs
Which books are best for SBI PO?expand_more
No single list fits everyone. Judge material by fit to the exam: quant books must reach mains-level caselet DI, reasoning books need box and floor puzzles with input-output, English material should use economy-themed comprehension, and banking awareness needs a daily current source rather than a static book.
Is free study material enough for SBI PO?expand_more
For prelims-level practice and current affairs, largely yes. The gap free material rarely fills is mains-difficulty DI and puzzle sets and full timed mocks scored with negative marking, which is where the exam is actually decided.
How important are previous year papers for SBI PO?expand_more
Useful for calibrating difficulty and question mix, with one caveat: SBI introduces new pattern types most cycles, so previous papers set the floor of what to expect, not the ceiling.
