SSC CGL posts range from Pay Level 4 (₹25,500 basic) to Pay Level 8 (₹47,600 basic). But pay level alone doesn't determine desirability — location, powers, promotion speed, and work quality matter just as much.

Best for Different Priorities
Best Pay + Power: Income Tax Inspector
ITO is the most coveted CGL post for good reason: Pay Level 7 (same as Inspector CGST), posting in major cities, enforcement powers (raids, searches, surveys under Income Tax Act), and a clear path to ACIT through departmental exam. The IRS (Group A) topper can be reached in 20–25 years through promotions.
Best Lifestyle: MEA Assistant Section Officer
ASO in Ministry of External Affairs gets Delhi posting (which means 27% HRA — highest slab), regular 9–5 hours, no field postings, and the possibility of being deputed to Indian Embassies abroad after 5 years. The work is interesting — processing visas, diplomatic cables, policy notes.
Best Investigation Career: CBI Sub-Inspector
CBI SI works on white-collar crime, corruption cases (against government officials), economic offences. High prestige, national-level cases, but demanding work. Promotion to Inspector in ~8 years, then DSP. CBI has its own academy in Ghaziabad for training.
Best for Research Aptitude: JSO / Statistical Investigator
Junior Statistical Officer (MoSPI) is perfect for candidates with Statistics/Mathematics background who prefer research over enforcement. Work involves National Sample Surveys, economic statistics, and government data analysis.
What No One Tells You About SSC CGL
- Post allocation: You don't choose your exact post — it's allocated based on your merit rank and your preference list. Top rankers get IT Inspector; lower rankers may get Excise Inspector or UDC.
- Home state posting: Not guaranteed. Some posts (CGST, Customs) can post you anywhere in India based on vacancy.
- Transfer cycles: Most posts have 3–5 year transfer cycles. Plan for relocation.
- Departmental exams: Promotions in IT (ITO exam), CSS (Section Officer exam) require additional exams — not just seniority.
