About this career
A Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) gives holistic, fee-only financial advice — across mutual funds, equities, debt, insurance and retirement — under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations. Crucially, an RIA is a fiduciary: they charge the client a transparent fee and cannot earn distribution commission on the products they recommend, which removes the conflict of interest baked into commission-led models. The path is more demanding than distribution. You must clear both NISM Series X-A (Level 1) and X-B (Level 2), meet SEBI's qualification and experience norms, satisfy the prescribed net-worth requirement, and then register directly with SEBI. In return you build a durable, advice-led practice with recurring fee income and deep client trust — the model global wealth management is steadily moving toward. RIAs serve individuals, families and, increasingly, HNIs through boutique and platform-based practices.

Frequently asked questions
What certifications does a SEBI RIA need?expand_more
Both NISM Series X-A (Level 1) and X-B (Level 2), along with the qualification, experience and net-worth criteria specified in the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations.
How is an RIA different from a mutual fund distributor?expand_more
An RIA gives fee-only advice and cannot earn distribution commissions on the products advised, whereas a distributor earns trail commission. The RIA model is advice-led and conflict-free.
Can I be both an RIA and a distributor?expand_more
Not for the same client. SEBI requires separation of advice and distribution — an individual cannot provide both advice and distribution to the same client, and there are client-level segregation rules for entities.
What is the net-worth requirement for an RIA?expand_more
SEBI prescribes a minimum net worth for registration (higher for non-individual advisers than individuals). Check the latest SEBI IA Regulations, as thresholds have been revised over time.
How do RIAs charge clients?expand_more
Either a fixed fee or a percentage of assets under advice, within SEBI's prescribed limits. The fee is disclosed upfront and is the RIA's only source of income from the client.
