IBPS PO vs SBI PO — Which Should You Choose?
Two of India's biggest bank-officer exams compared — vacancies, difficulty, salary and career growth.
IBPS PO and SBI PO are the two most sought-after Probationary Officer exams in India. IBPS PO recruits for a group of participating public-sector banks through a common process, while SBI PO recruits only for the State Bank of India. The exam patterns are similar, but the differences in scale, difficulty, salary and posting flexibility are what most aspirants weigh.

Which should you choose?
Choose SBI PO if you want the highest bank-officer pay, faster growth and a single-employer career, and can handle a tougher, more competitive exam with a descriptive test and interview. Choose IBPS PO if you want more vacancies, more attempts at getting placed across many banks, and slightly more predictable cut-offs. Most serious aspirants prepare for both — the syllabus overlaps almost entirely.
IBPS PO vs SBI PO — FAQ
Is SBI PO tougher than IBPS PO?
Generally yes. SBI PO has higher cut-offs, a more demanding Mains (including a descriptive test), and a Group Exercise & Interview round, making it more competitive than IBPS PO despite the near-identical syllabus.
Which pays more, IBPS PO or SBI PO?
SBI PO pays more — roughly ₹80,000–82,000/month in-hand (CTC ~₹21.97 lakh/yr) versus around ₹52,000+/month CTC for IBPS PO — and SBI also offers faster promotions.
Can I prepare for both at once?
Yes. The Prelims and Mains syllabus overlaps almost entirely (Reasoning, Quant/DI, English, Banking Awareness), so most candidates prepare once and appear for both exams.
