JAIIB vs CAIIB — Which Should You Choose?
IIBF's two banker certifications compared — papers, difficulty, increments and when to take each.
JAIIB and CAIIB are both professional certifications from the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), taken by serving bankers to earn salary increments and strengthen promotions. JAIIB is the foundational qualification; CAIIB is the advanced one taken after it. They aren't alternatives — they're sequential steps on the same ladder.

Key differences at a glance
- JAIIB is foundational (4 papers); CAIIB is advanced (4 compulsory + 1 elective) and requires JAIIB first.
- CAIIB is tougher — advanced bank management, risk, treasury and business law versus JAIIB's core banking basics.
- JAIIB earns one increment; CAIIB earns additional increment(s) on top under IBA settlements.
- CAIIB's elective (Risk, IT & Digital Banking, Central Banking, etc.) lets you specialise for niche roles.
- Both are open only to IIBF members employed at member banks/financial institutions.
Which should you choose?
There's no either/or here: clear JAIIB first (it's the prerequisite), then CAIIB. JAIIB builds core banking, accounting and retail-banking competence and earns one increment. CAIIB is harder — covering advanced bank management, risk, treasury, regulations and an elective — and earns additional increments plus a real edge in officer promotions.
JAIIB vs CAIIB — FAQ
Should I take JAIIB or CAIIB first?
JAIIB first — it is the prerequisite for CAIIB. You must clear JAIIB before you can register for CAIIB.
Which is harder, JAIIB or CAIIB?
CAIIB is harder. It covers advanced bank management, financial and risk management, banking regulations and an elective, whereas JAIIB covers foundational banking, accounting and retail banking.
Do both give salary increments?
Yes. Under IBA settlements, JAIIB earns one increment and CAIIB earns additional increment(s) on top — a key reason bankers pursue both.
