The Insurance Industry in India
From state monopoly to an open market with one regulator. The dates and the players IC-01 expects you to know.
India's insurance market has gone through three phases: private companies competing with little control, a long stretch of state monopoly after nationalisation, and, since the IRDA Act 1999, an open market of public and private insurers supervised by one regulator.
IC-01 expects you to know the shape of that market: the kinds of insurers, the intermediaries who sell their policies, and the bodies that regulate them and handle complaints. The exact count of companies changes; the structure does not.

Who Is in the Market Today
Counts are from IRDAI's registered-insurer lists as checked in October 2026. They change as companies enter, merge or rename.
- Life insurers
- 26 on IRDAI's list. LIC is the only public sector life insurer; the rest are private, many of them joint ventures between an Indian group and a foreign insurer.
- General insurers
- 28 on IRDAI's list. Six are public sector: New India Assurance, National Insurance, Oriental Insurance and United India Insurance, plus two specialised insurers, Agriculture Insurance Company of India (crop) and ECGC (export credit).
- Standalone health insurers
- 8 on IRDAI's list. They write only health, personal accident and travel cover. General insurers sell health cover too.
- Reinsurers
- General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) is the Indian national reinsurer. IRDAI also lists two other Indian reinsurers, and foreign reinsurers operate through branches in India.
- Intermediaries
- Individual agents, corporate agents (banks under bancassurance, for example), brokers, web aggregators, insurance marketing firms and third-party administrators for health claims. Each is licensed or registered by IRDAI.
The Regulator and the Rule Book
- check_circleIRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) is the statutory body that registers insurers and intermediaries, protects policyholders and promotes orderly growth of the industry.
- check_circleThe Insurance Act 1938 remains the main law on how insurers are formed and run. The IRDA Act 1999 created the regulator and gave it its powers.
- check_circleIRDAI writes the detailed rules as regulations and master circulars. Many older regulations were replaced by consolidated 2024 regulations, so dates and limits in older study material may be out of date.
- check_circleInsurance Ombudsmen hear individual policyholder complaints against insurers without a court case. They sit in cities across India.

Public Sector vs Private: What Changed After 1999
Before the IRDA Act, a person in Indore who wanted life cover had one choice, LIC, and a factory owner had four public sector general insurers. Opening the market brought private companies, bank distribution and new products, but the public sector insurers remain large. IC-01 asks about the structure and the regulator, not market shares.
How IC-01 Tests This
Expect year-to-event matching (which year was life insurance nationalised, which Act opened the market) and role questions (who regulates intermediaries, who is the national reinsurer). The common trap is the two nationalisations: life in 1956, general insurance by the 1972 Act with effect from 1973. Candidates swap them, or give 1972 as the date general insurance became state-run.
A second trap is treating IRDAI as an insurer or a reinsurer. IRDAI regulates; it does not write policies or pay claims.
