Policy Document and Endorsements
The policy is the evidence of the contract. An endorsement is how it changes mid-term.
The policy document is the written evidence of the insurance contract. It is not the contract itself, which was formed when the insurer accepted the proposal, but it is what everyone reads when a claim arrives. An endorsement is how that document is changed afterwards.
Think of a home policy for a flat in Pune. The policy says what is covered and on what terms. When the owner later takes a home loan and the bank's interest has to be recorded, or adds jewellery to the cover, the change is made by endorsement, not by issuing a new policy.

The Parts of a Policy Document
Wording varies by insurer and class, but IC-01 expects you to recognise these parts.
- Schedule
- The page specific to you: names, policy number, period, the property or life insured, sum insured or sum assured, premium, and any special terms. Everything else is usually standard wording.
- Preamble (recital)
- States that the proposal and declaration form the basis of the contract, tying the policy back to what the proposer disclosed.
- Operative clause
- The insurer's core promise: what it will pay, for which perils or events, and up to what limit.
- Exclusions
- Losses or causes the policy does not cover, such as war, nuclear risks or wear and tear. IRDAI requires every applicable exclusion to be written in the policy; an insurer cannot deduct from a claim under an exclusion that is not there.
- Conditions
- Rules both sides must follow: notice of claim, cancellation, contribution, arbitration. IRDAI asks insurers to group them into conditions precedent to the contract, during it, on a claim, for renewal, for cancellation and for grievance redressal.
- Attestation
- The insurer's signature, digital for electronic policies, which makes the document authentic.
How Policy Wording Is Read
When wording is unclear or two parts conflict, the courseware gives these rules of interpretation:
- check_circleAmbiguity is read against the insurer, because the insurer drafted it (contra proferentem).
- check_circleTyped or handwritten words prevail over printed standard wording, because they show what the parties specifically agreed.
- check_circleAn endorsement prevails over the policy wording it modifies, and a later endorsement over an earlier one.
- check_circleWords are given their ordinary meaning unless the policy defines them, in which case the definition governs.
- check_circleThe policy is read as a whole, together with the proposal form it refers to.
Common Endorsements
| Change | Example |
|---|---|
| Change in sum insured | A shop adds Diwali stock and raises its cover for three months |
| Interest of a financier | A bank's lien is noted on a car bought on loan or a house under a home loan |
| Change of address or risk location | Insured goods move from one godown to another |
| Change of nominee | A life policyholder names a spouse after marriage. IRDAI accepts an endorsement as valid acknowledgement of the change |
| Extra cover or restriction | Adding earthquake cover to a fire policy, or recording a new exclusion agreed with the insured |
| Correction | Fixing a misspelt name or a wrong vehicle engine number |

What IRDAI's 2024 Rules Add
Insurers now issue policies in electronic form, and must issue a physical copy if the policyholder asks. Policy wording must be in plain terms, avoid one-sided clauses and use at least font size 11. Within 15 days of accepting a proposal, the insurer sends the policy, a copy of the proposal form and a Customer Information Sheet, which summarises cover, exclusions, claims procedure and grievance contacts in simple words.
How IC-01 Tests This
Expect "which part of the policy contains the insurer's promise to pay?" (the operative clause), "which part is unique to each policyholder?" (the schedule) and "how is a change made during the policy period?" (an endorsement). Conflict questions ask which wording wins: typed over printed, endorsement over policy.
The common trap is treating the policy document as the contract itself. The contract is formed on acceptance and premium; the document is evidence of it, which is why a cover note can carry cover before any policy exists.
FAQs
What is an endorsement in an insurance policy?expand_more
A written alteration to a policy during its term, such as a change of address, sum insured, nominee or financier. It forms part of the policy and prevails over the wording it changes.
What is the operative clause in an insurance policy?expand_more
The clause that states the insurer's promise: what it will pay, for which events, up to what amount. It is the heart of the policy; the exclusions and conditions then limit it.
What is the policy schedule?expand_more
The part of the policy specific to the insured: names, policy number, period, subject matter, sum insured, premium and any special terms.
Can an insurance policy be issued only in electronic form?expand_more
Yes. IRDAI's 2024 regulations require insurers to issue policies electronically, and to give a physical copy if the policyholder asks for one.
