NISM Series V-A Study Material: What to Use
The official NISM workbook, third-party notes and mock tests, and what each is genuinely good for.
Series V-A is one of the few certifications where the official material genuinely is sufficient. The NISM workbook covers the entire examinable scope, the questions are drawn from it, and candidates pass on the workbook alone every day. Anything else you buy is buying speed or confidence, not coverage.
That said, the workbook is written as a reference document rather than as a study guide, and reading it end to end is not the same as being ready to answer 100 questions about it under time pressure. This page is about which gap each type of material actually fills.
The material landscape
What each source is genuinely good for:
- The official NISM workbook: start here
- Free to download from the NISM certifications portal once you register. It is the examinable scope, verbatim: if something is not in the workbook, it is not on the paper. Read it once fully, then again only for chapters 2, 3, 5 and 6.
- Mock tests: the highest-value addition
- The workbook tells you the material; a timed mock tells you whether you can retrieve it in 72 seconds per question. This is the one addition that reliably changes outcomes, because the gap most candidates have is recall speed, not knowledge.
- Third-party guides and summary notes
- Useful if you find the workbook's register heavy going, and genuinely helpful for chapter 4 (regulation), which is the driest section. Not a replacement: summaries routinely drop the procedural detail in chapters 5 and 6 that the exam likes to ask about.
- Video courses
- Worth it only if you learn better by listening than by reading. They cost time you could spend on mocks, and V-A's material is not conceptually hard enough to need explaining: it needs remembering.
- AMFI and SEBI source documents
- Overkill for the exam. The workbook already condenses what you need from SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations 1996 and the AMFI code. Read the originals for the job, not for the paper.
Use the current workbook edition
NISM revises workbooks between editions, and the regulatory chapter is the one that moves. An older PDF circulating on a forum or a messaging group may describe superseded rules on commission structure or cut-off timings, exactly the procedural detail the exam asks about. Download the current edition from the portal after you register rather than working from a copy someone shared.

Common purchases that do not move the needle for this particular exam:
- check_circleQuestion banks with no explanations: a wrong answer you can't diagnose teaches nothing
- check_circleAnything marketed as "guaranteed questions" or a leaked paper; NISM rotates from a large pool
- check_circleMaterial written for Series V-B or V-C, which have different scope
- check_circlePrinted workbooks bought second-hand, unless you have checked the edition against the current one
