NISM Series VIII Eligibility: Who Needs It?
NISM certifications have no degree requirement. What matters is the role you hold. Here is who Series VIII is mandatory for.
Anyone can sit NISM Series VIII. There is no minimum educational qualification, no age bar, and no prior certification required. The exam is open to students, career changers and working professionals alike.
Who MUST hold it is a different question, and that answer comes from SEBI, not NISM. SEBI requires every approved user and every sales person of a trading member in the equity derivatives segment of a recognised stock exchange to hold a valid Series VIII certificate. If your job touches F&O order flow or F&O advice at a broking firm, this exam is not optional.
Who must hold Series VIII
Mandatory for anyone working in the equity derivatives segment of a trading member, including:
- checkApproved users and sales personnel in the equity derivatives segment
- checkDealers and terminal operators executing F&O orders on NSE or BSE
- checkRelationship managers and advisors recommending futures and options to clients
- checkRisk and compliance staff at broking firms handling derivatives exposure
Taking it without a mandate
A large share of Series VIII candidates are not compelled by SEBI at all. Finance students and traders take it because it is the most recognised credential for equity derivatives knowledge in India, and broking firms treat it as a screening filter for dealer and sales-trader roles. If you are applying for an F&O desk job, holding the certificate before the interview is a genuine advantage: the firm would otherwise have to get you certified after hiring.

- checkAre you a student or trader building credentials for an F&O role? → You are free to take it; no qualification is needed to register.

Can students take NISM Series VIII?expand_more
Yes. The exam has no eligibility bar, and students commonly take it to qualify for dealer, sales-trader and research roles at broking firms before applying.

No. The SEBI mandate applies to people working at trading members, not to individual investors trading their own money. Retail traders sometimes take the exam anyway for the structured grounding it gives in futures and options.
