NISM Series VIII Study Material: What to Use
The official NISM workbook, third-party notes and mock tests, and what each is genuinely good for.
For Series VIII, the official NISM workbook is the syllabus. Every question on the 100-mark paper traces back to it, and NISM revises it between cycles, so the current edition from the certifications portal is the one document you cannot skip.
But the workbook alone has a known gap: it teaches options pricing, payoff diagrams and margin mechanics as theory, and the exam tests them as calculations under time pressure. That gap is where most of your supplementary effort should go. What you add matters less than whether it makes you work problems rather than reread explanations.
The material landscape
What each source is genuinely good for:
- The official NISM workbook: start here
- Available via the NISM certifications portal once you register. It defines the examinable scope: futures, options, trading, clearing and settlement, and the SEBI regulatory framework. If a topic is not in the workbook, it is not on the paper.
- Worked practice questions
- The highest-value addition for this exam. Payoff charts, option premiums and margin questions are solved with a pencil, not recognised from memory. Prefer question sets that show the working for every answer, so a wrong answer teaches you the method instead of just the letter.
- Timed mocks
- What tells you whether 100 questions in 2 hours is comfortable, and whether the 0.25 negative marking is changing how you answer. One untimed pass through a question bank feels nothing like the real pacing.
- Third-party notes and video explainers
- Useful for the conceptual chapters, especially if options are new to you and the workbook's treatment feels compressed. Treat them as a supplement: their coverage drifts from the current workbook edition, and the workbook wins every disagreement.
Check the workbook edition before you study
NISM updates the Series VIII workbook periodically, and questions follow the current edition. Download it fresh from the certifications portal after registering rather than studying from a shared PDF of unknown vintage.

What to skip
Common purchases that do not move the needle for this exam:
- check_circleQuestion banks with answer keys but no worked solutions: a wrong payoff answer you cannot diagnose teaches nothing
- check_circleAnything marketed as "guaranteed questions" or a leaked paper
- check_circleGeneral derivatives textbooks written for university courses: excellent books, wrong scope, and they will absorb weeks the workbook needed
- check_circleOld workbook editions circulating as free PDFs, which quietly diverge from what the current paper tests
Study material questions
Is the NISM Series VIII workbook enough to pass?expand_more
The workbook covers the full examinable scope, so in principle yes. In practice, candidates who only read it tend to struggle with the calculation questions on options pricing, payoffs and margins, which need worked practice the workbook does not provide. Reading plus timed question practice is the reliable combination.
Where do I get the official Series VIII workbook?expand_more
From the NISM certifications portal after you register for the exam. NISM publishes the workbook itself and revises it between cycles, so the portal copy is the current edition.
Do I need a separate book for options and futures?expand_more
Not for the exam. The workbook defines everything the paper can ask. A separate explainer can help if derivatives are completely new to you, but it supplements the workbook rather than replacing it.
