NISM Series X-B Study Material: What to Use
The official NISM workbook, third-party notes and mock tests, and what each is genuinely good for.
By the time you reach Series X-B you already know how NISM materials work: the official workbook is the syllabus, and the current edition on the certifications portal is the copy to study from. That rule does not change at Level 2.
What changes is the shape of the challenge. X-B's workbook covers household financial planning across insurance, retirement, estate planning, taxation, behavioural finance and risk profiling, and its chapters are readable one at a time. The exam's hardest questions are integrated cases that use several of those subjects on one client at once. The workbook builds the parts; your practice has to build the assembly.
The material landscape
What each source is genuinely good for:
- The official NISM workbook: start here
- Available via the NISM certifications portal once you register. It defines the examinable scope across every planning subject on the paper, and NISM revises it between cycles.
- Integrated case practice
- The single most valuable addition for X-B. A case that combines a client's insurance gap, retirement corpus and tax position is a different exercise from three separate chapter questions, and the exam is built around exactly that difference.
- Timed full-length mocks
- 150 questions in 3 hours, with cases that each absorb several minutes. A timed mock is the only honest test of whether your case-solving speed leaves enough time for the straightforward MCQs that fund your pass mark.
- Your Series X-A notes
- Worth keeping open. X-B assumes Level 1's foundations in products, portfolio construction and the planning process, and questions freely draw on them. Revising X-A's core chapters is legitimate X-B preparation.
Use the current workbook edition
Tax figures and regulatory detail are the parts of the X-B syllabus most likely to change between workbook editions. Download the current edition from the NISM certifications portal after registering rather than relying on a circulated PDF.

What to skip
Common purchases that do not move the needle for this exam:
- check_circleMCQ-only question banks with no case-based questions: they train the format the exam uses least at the top end
- check_circleAnything marketed as "guaranteed questions" or a leaked paper
- check_circleInternational financial planning curricula: respected material, different tax and product regimes, wrong exam
- check_circleDeep single-subject books on tax or insurance: the workbook already sets the examinable depth, and going beyond it costs time without earning marks
Study material questions
Is the NISM Series X-B workbook enough to pass?expand_more
It covers the full examinable scope, so nothing outside it is required reading. Most successful candidates still add timed mocks and integrated case practice, because the exam's case-analysis questions combine several subjects at once and the workbook offers no rehearsal of that format.
Where do I get the official Series X-B workbook?expand_more
From the NISM certifications portal after you register for the exam. NISM publishes the workbook itself and revises it between cycles, so the portal copy is the current edition.
Should I revise Series X-A material while preparing for X-B?expand_more
Yes, selectively. X-B builds on Level 1's foundations in investment products, portfolio construction and the planning process, and exam questions assume them. A revision pass over your X-A core notes is time well spent, especially if months have passed since you cleared it.
