NISM Series XV Eligibility: Who Needs It?
NISM certifications have no degree requirement. What matters is the role you hold. Here is who Series XV is mandatory for.
The NISM Series XV exam is open to everyone. No degree, no minimum age, no work experience: you register, pay and book a slot. If your question is whether you are allowed to sit the Research Analyst exam, the answer is yes.
The stricter gate sits one step later. Under the SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014, anyone who issues research reports or makes public buy/sell recommendations on securities must be registered with SEBI as a Research Analyst, and registration requires more than the exam: a prescribed qualification as well. Plenty of people pass Series XV who cannot yet register, and knowing which side of that line you are on is what this page is for.
Who must hold Series XV
Under the SEBI RA framework, a valid Series XV certificate is required for:
- checkAnyone registering with SEBI as a Research Analyst, individual or entity
- checkEmployees of a registered RA who prepare or publish research reports
- checkAnalysts issuing buy/sell/hold recommendations on listed securities
- checkFinfluencers and newsletter authors making securities recommendations to the public
Sitting the exam vs registering with SEBI
Two different bars, routinely confused:
| Taking the Series XV exam | SEBI RA registration |
|---|---|
| Open to anyone, no qualification needed | Prescribed qualification required in addition to the exam |
| No experience requirement | A relevant postgraduate/professional qualification, or graduation with 5 years of relevant experience |
| Register on the NISM portal, book a slot | Application to SEBI after all conditions are met |
| Certificate valid 3 years | Registration carries its own ongoing compliance obligations |

SEBI has been actively tightening the rules around public securities recommendations, and the RA registration requirements are revised through amendments and circulars. If you publish recommendations in any form, check the current SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations rather than relying on a summary, this one included.
If you make stock recommendations online
The group most often surprised by this exam's mandate is creators: YouTube channels, Telegram groups and newsletters that recommend specific securities. SEBI's position is that public buy/sell recommendations are research analysis, whatever the platform, which puts unregistered finfluencers on the wrong side of the regulations. Passing Series XV is the certification step of fixing that; registration, with its qualification requirement, is the rest.
For everyone else, XV works like any other NISM credential. Equity research associates at broking houses, buy-side analysts and rating agency staff take it because their employer's registration depends on certified analysts, and aspiring analysts take it because it is the recognised entry credential for research roles in India.
Eligibility questions
Is there a minimum qualification for the NISM Series XV exam?expand_more
No. The exam itself is open to anyone, with no educational or experience requirement. Qualification requirements apply at the SEBI Research Analyst registration stage, not at the exam.
What are the eligibility requirements for SEBI RA registration?expand_more
Beyond passing NISM Series XV, SEBI requires a professional qualification or postgraduate degree in a relevant field such as finance, accountancy, business management, commerce, economics, capital markets or banking, or a graduate degree with 5 years of relevant experience. The certificate alone does not make you a registered Research Analyst.
Do finfluencers need NISM Series XV?expand_more
If they make public buy/sell recommendations on specific securities, yes. SEBI treats public securities recommendations as research analysis under the RA Regulations, which requires registration, and a valid Series XV certificate is one of registration's conditions.
Can a student take Series XV before finishing their degree?expand_more
Yes. The exam has no qualification bar, and students targeting equity research roles commonly clear it before graduating. SEBI registration, if they later want it, waits until the qualification requirement is met.
