NISM Series XV Study Material: What to Use
The official NISM workbook, third-party notes and mock tests, and what each is genuinely good for.
The Series XV workbook currently runs to 15 chapters, spanning fundamental analysis, technical analysis, valuation and the SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations. As with every NISM exam, that workbook is the examinable scope, and the current edition from the certifications portal is the copy that matches the paper.
The edition point matters more for XV than for most series. The syllabus has been expanded and reorganised, and older material still circulating online describes a smaller exam. A candidate studying from a stale copy is not slightly out of date; they are missing chapters. That, plus the paper's appetite for valuation and financial-statement questions that must be worked rather than remembered, defines what to add.
The material landscape
What each source is genuinely good for:
- The official NISM workbook: start here
- Available via the NISM certifications portal once you register. All 15 chapters are examinable, and NISM revises the workbook between cycles. If a topic is not in the current edition, it is not on the paper.
- Worked valuation practice
- The highest-value addition. Ratio analysis, DCF logic and relative valuation questions are calculations, and the exam's 2-hour clock leaves no room to derive methods from first principles. Prefer question sets with step-by-step solutions, so a wrong answer teaches the method.
- Timed mocks
- What tells you whether your pace survives 100 questions in 2 hours, and whether the 0.25 negative marking is changing your answering behaviour. Also the only reliable way to find which of the 15 chapters is quietly weak.
- Actual research reports
- A cheap, underused supplement. Reading a few published broker reports makes the workbook's material concrete: you see the disclosure norms, the valuation sections and the recommendation language the regulations chapter describes. Background reading, not a substitute for the workbook.
The stale-PDF trap is worst on this exam
Series XV's syllabus was expanded to its current 15-chapter form, and summaries and PDFs based on earlier, smaller editions still circulate widely. Verify that anything you study from matches the current workbook's chapter list, and when in doubt, trust only the edition downloaded from the NISM portal.

What to skip
Common purchases that do not move the needle for this exam:
- check_circleQuestion banks with answer letters but no worked solutions, useless for diagnosing a wrong valuation answer
- check_circleAnything marketed as "guaranteed questions" or a leaked paper
- check_circleFull equity research or CFA-style curricula: far deeper than the exam tests, and weeks of effort the 15 workbook chapters need more
- check_circleNotes and video courses that do not state which workbook edition they follow
Study material questions
Is the NISM Series XV workbook enough to pass?expand_more
The workbook covers the full examinable scope, so nothing outside it is required. Most candidates still add worked valuation practice and timed mocks, because the paper's calculation questions reward practised method over recall, and the workbook provides theory rather than drills.
How many chapters does the Series XV workbook have?expand_more
The current workbook has 15 chapters, covering fundamental analysis, technical analysis, valuation and the SEBI Research Analyst regulatory framework. Older summaries describing a shorter syllabus are based on superseded editions.
Where do I get the official Series XV workbook?expand_more
From the NISM certifications portal after you register for the exam. NISM publishes and revises the workbook itself, so the portal copy is always the current edition.
