Read every figure as an indicative range

Before any numbers, one essential caveat: CFA salaries in India are not fixed. They swing widely with the employer (a bulge-bracket bank versus a boutique), the city (Mumbai and Bengaluru versus smaller centres), the specific role, and your prior experience. The ranges below are indicative and drawn from general market observation; they are not guarantees, and individual offers can fall outside them in either direction.

Indicative CFA salary ranges by stage

Career stageTypical rolesIndicative range (per annum)
Entry levelResearch analyst, junior analyst, associate~₹6-12 lakh
Mid levelSenior analyst, portfolio associate, AM roles~₹15-30 lakh
SeniorPortfolio manager, fund manager, senior charterholderSignificantly higher; varies widely

These bands assume roles in investment-facing functions such as equity research, asset management (AM) and portfolio management. Pay in adjacent roles can differ. For the roles themselves, see CFA career and job roles.

What moves you up the range

Several factors push compensation towards the upper end of any band:

  • Employer tier: Global investment banks and large asset managers generally pay more than smaller or domestic firms.
  • City: Financial hubs like Mumbai typically command higher pay than non-metro locations.
  • Role criticality: Revenue-linked and client-facing roles, and those with direct portfolio responsibility, tend to pay more.
  • Progress in the programme: The full charter usually carries more weight for senior pay than a single level.

Does clearing CFA Level I lift your salary?

Clearing CFA Level I can help candidates break into entry-level research and analyst roles and may improve starting offers relative to non-CFA peers, but on its own it rarely commands a large premium. The bigger salary impact tends to come with completing more levels and, ultimately, earning the charter, which requires passing all three levels plus qualified experience. See CFA charter requirements for what full charterholder status involves.

Level I can open the door; the completed charter, plus experience, is what tends to move senior compensation.

Experience matters as much as the charter

It is worth stressing that the CFA is one input into pay, not the sole determinant. Years of relevant experience, demonstrated performance, the strength of your firm and your specific mandate often matter as much as the credential itself. A charterholder early in their career will typically earn less than a seasoned professional in the same role, charter or not.

Is the pay worth the investment?

Whether these ranges justify the cost and effort of the CFA depends on your goals and starting point. The programme's all-in cost of around ₹1.5-3 lakh is modest against the mid- and senior-level ranges shown, but the returns are neither automatic nor immediate.
