Why scholarships matter
Without any aid, the CFA Program costs roughly US$350 for first-time Level I enrolment plus per-exam fees of about US$990–1,290 for each of the three levels — an all-in figure often quoted at ₹1.5–3 lakh or more. For students and early-career candidates in India, that is a significant sum. CFA Institute's scholarship programme exists precisely to remove this barrier, and many candidates who assume the CFA is out of reach financially simply have not applied. See how the full cost stacks up in our CFA exam fees guide.
The Access Scholarship
The Access Scholarship is the flagship award and the most impactful for cost-conscious candidates. It is aimed at those who cannot otherwise afford the standard fees. For successful applicants, it waives the one-time enrolment fee and reduces the exam registration fee to a small nominal amount — a saving of the vast majority of the per-exam cost. This single scholarship can transform the economics of pursuing the charter.
Who qualifies for the Access Scholarship?
Eligibility centres on demonstrated financial need. You apply, explain your circumstances, and CFA Institute assesses whether you qualify. It is open to candidates around the world, including India, and you can apply for it at each level as you progress. Because it is need-based rather than merit-based, strong academic performance is not the deciding factor — genuine financial need is.
Other CFA scholarships
- Women's Scholarships — support candidates who identify as women and are not otherwise able to access CFA Program scholarships through their employer or university, helping address underrepresentation in the profession.
- Student Scholarships — offered to students at universities and colleges that are affiliated with CFA Institute (through its University Affiliation Programme). If your institution participates, ask its faculty or placement cell about availability.
- Professor and other targeted awards — CFA Institute also runs scholarships for academics and specific groups; check the official site for the current list.
How and when to apply
Timing is critical. You must apply for and be awarded a scholarship before you register and pay for an exam window. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively to a registration you have already paid for. Deadlines differ by exam window and by scholarship type, so you should:
- Decide roughly which Level I window you are targeting.
- Check the scholarship deadlines for that window on cfainstitute.org well in advance.
- Prepare your application, including any documentation of financial circumstances.
- Submit before the deadline, await the decision, and only then register at the reduced rate.
Fitting this into your overall plan is covered in how to start your CFA journey.
How much can you actually save?
| Item | Standard cost | With Access Scholarship |
|---|---|---|
| One-time enrolment (Level I only) | ~US$350 | Waived |
| Per-exam registration fee | ~US$990–1,290 | Small nominal amount |
In practice this can turn a per-level cost of tens of thousands of rupees into a few thousand — making the scholarship one of the highest-return steps in your entire CFA journey. Figures change each cycle, so always confirm current amounts and deadlines on cfainstitute.org.
Should you rely on a scholarship?
Apply, but have a backup plan. Awards are not guaranteed, and demand is high. If a scholarship does not come through, you can still register at standard rates or target a later window. Understanding whether the overall investment pays off is worth reading alongside this — see is the CFA worth it in India.
The most expensive mistake is registering first and discovering scholarships afterwards — you cannot claim them retroactively.
