Types of Data Interpretation
1. Table-Based DI
Most common type. A table presents data for multiple categories across multiple years/regions.
Strategy: Read the column headings first. Identify which rows/columns each question needs. Don't read the entire table upfront.
Common question types:
- Total/Average for a row or column
- % change year-on-year
- Ratio between two cells
- Finding the maximum/minimum value
2. Bar Graph DI
Bars represent absolute values for categories. Read bar heights carefully — scale matters (each division could be 100 or 10,000).
Common traps: Stacked bar vs grouped bar — read the legend. % change vs absolute change — re-read the question.
3. Pie Chart DI
Each segment shows % of a total. The absolute value = (% / 100) × Total.
Key formula: If Pie A shows distribution of income and Pie B shows distribution of expenditure for the same year, saving = income − expenditure per category.
Two-pie DI: Very common in IBPS PO Mains. One pie for total (e.g., all states), another for sub-category (e.g., urban population). Calculate absolute values first from each pie, then answer questions.
4. Caselet DI (Paragraph DI)
A paragraph gives all data — you must extract and organise it yourself before solving.
Approach:
- Read full paragraph once quickly
- Draw a blank table with categories as rows and variables as columns
- Re-read paragraph to fill in the table values
- Solve questions from your table (not the paragraph)
Time allocation: 2 minutes for table construction, 1 minute per question = 7–8 minutes for a 5-question caselet set.
5. Mixed DI
Two charts together — e.g., line graph for total sales + bar graph for profit %. Questions ask for absolute profit, which requires data from both charts.
Most common cross-chart calculation: Absolute Value = Total × Percentage from another chart.
Calculation Shortcuts

Use fractions: 1/6 ≈ 16.67%, 1/7 ≈ 14.28%, 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/9 ≈ 11.11%, 1/11 ≈ 9.09%, 1/12 ≈ 8.33%
So if a value goes from 120 to 140, increase = 20/120 = 1/6 ≈ 16.67%.
Approximation rules
- Round off numbers to nearest 50 or 100 for multiplication
- If answer options differ by >5%, approximate aggressively
- Avoid exact calculation — estimate to eliminate 3 wrong options
