Same exam, two ways to sit it
Every NISM certification exam is a computer-based test (CBT). What changes between the two modes is where and how you sit it. In the test-centre format you attend a designated NISM/exam-partner centre and take the exam on their computers under on-site supervision. In the remote-proctored format you take the same exam from home or office, monitored live through your webcam by a remote invigilator.
Crucially, the syllabus, marks (100), duration, passing criteria and the certificate you receive are identical. The choice is about logistics and comfort, not about the value of the certification.
What the remote-proctored exam requires
The convenience of the online mode comes with setup responsibilities. You will typically need:
- A laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone.
- A stable, reasonably fast internet connection for the full duration.
- A quiet, private, well-lit room with no other people, notes or devices.
- A valid government photo ID (PAN or similar) for identity verification.
- A supported browser and any proctoring software or system check the platform prescribes.
The proctor may ask you to show your surroundings on camera before you start. Any breach, such as leaving the frame or a second person entering, can flag or void your attempt.
What the test-centre exam offers
The centre-based route removes your home setup from the equation. The venue provides the computer, the connection and a controlled, distraction-controlled environment, with staff on hand if anything goes wrong technically. For candidates without reliable internet or a suitable private space, this is the safer choice. The trade-off is travel to the centre and sitting within the centre's available slots.

How to choose
Pick the remote-proctored option if you have a reliable internet connection, a quiet private room, and value saving travel time, or if no centre is conveniently near you. Pick the test centre if your home internet or environment is uncertain, if you find a supervised setting less stressful, or if you simply prefer to keep exam day separate from home. Availability of each mode can vary by series and location, so confirm at booking.

Whichever mode you choose, treat the format as part of your preparation. For a remote exam, test your webcam, internet and room in advance and clear the desk of anything not allowed.
