How Hard Is RBI Grade B, Really?
Fewer than a hundred posts a cycle and a descriptive Phase 2. The difficulty is structural, not mysterious.
RBI Grade B is among the toughest regulatory exams in India, and the reason is arithmetic before it is anything else: the 2024 cycle offered 94 posts, 66 of them in the General stream, against an applicant pool measured in lakhs.
But raw competition ratios overstate the difficulty for a serious candidate, because most applicants never prepare for the part of the exam that selects. Understanding where the exam actually filters people is more useful than the ratio.

Where the Exam Actually Filters Candidates
- check_circlePhase 1's sectional cut-offs: with one-fourth negative marking and four sections, one weak section can end a cycle even on a decent total.
- check_circleThe descriptive half of Phase 2: 100 marks of typed answers across ESI and Finance & Management, plus a fully descriptive 100-mark English paper. Most aptitude-trained candidates arrive unpractised here.
- check_circleThe subject depth itself: ESI and Finance & Management reward months of reading, not weeks of cramming.
- check_circleThe interview's 75 marks, a fifth of the 375-mark merit calculation, where thin genuine engagement with economics and banking shows.
The Attempt Cap Raises the Stakes for Some
General and EWS candidates get a maximum of 6 attempts at Phase 1; SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates have no cap within the age limit of 21 to 30 years (with relaxations). For a General candidate, a half-prepared attempt is not free: it consumes one of six. That argues for entering a cycle only when your mock scores say you are competitive.

Who Finds It Manageable, and Who Should Think Twice
Candidates with an economics, commerce or finance background start ahead on Phase 2, and bank-PO-level aptitude preparation transfers directly to Phase 1. Someone with both, plus a writing habit, is competing with a much smaller field than the headline numbers suggest.
If you cannot commit to sustained descriptive-writing practice alongside subject reading, this exam punishes that gap specifically. It is a better use of the same effort to be honest about that early than to discover it in the Phase 2 hall.
Difficulty Is a Distribution, Not a Verdict

RBI Grade B Difficulty FAQs
Why is RBI Grade B considered so difficult?expand_more
Very high competition (94 posts in the 2024 cycle against lakhs of applicants) combined with a demanding descriptive Phase 2 on Economic & Social Issues and Finance & Management.
Is RBI Grade B harder than a bank PO exam?expand_more
The Phase 1 aptitude sections are comparable in kind, but RBI Grade B adds a subject-heavy, half-descriptive Phase 2 and far fewer posts, which is where the difficulty gap opens.
Does the 6-attempt limit apply to everyone?expand_more
No. It applies to General and EWS candidates at Phase 1. SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates have no attempt restriction within the age limit.
