SEBI Grade A vs RBI Grade B: An Honest Comparison
Higher gross pay at SEBI, a central-banking career at RBI, and enough syllabus overlap to prepare both.
Choose SEBI Grade A if you want the higher entry pay and a capital-markets career, largely Mumbai-centred. Choose RBI Grade B if you want central banking's breadth, monetary policy, regulation, supervision and currency, with postings across the country. The aptitude and finance syllabi overlap enough that many aspirants prepare for both in the same season.
That is the verdict. The rest of this page is the evidence: the two exams compared on the numbers from their last notified cycles, both drawn from the same dataset so neither side is flattered.

Where the Exams Differ Most
Structure, first. RBI's Phase 2 is three papers with heavy descriptive components including a fully descriptive English paper; SEBI's Phase 2 is two papers, with the stream paper carrying two-thirds weight. RBI demands more sustained essay-style writing; SEBI demands more subject width inside one paper, from accounting to Companies Act.
Eligibility, second. SEBI's General stream needs a Master's, or a Law/Engineering degree, or CA/CFA/CS/Cost Accountant. RBI's General stream takes a Bachelor's with 60%. A plain graduate qualifies for RBI but not for SEBI's General stream, which quietly settles the question for part of the applicant pool.
And attempts. RBI caps General/EWS candidates at 6 Phase 1 attempts; SEBI has no cap. For a candidate starting late in the age band, that asymmetry can matter more than any syllabus difference.
The aptitude sections overlap. Test yourself once, learn about both.
Preparing for Both
The overlap is real: reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English are common ground, and both Phase 2s draw on the financial system, markets, instruments and management topics. The divergence is RBI's Economic & Social Issues paper and its writing-heavy format on one side, and SEBI's accounting, costing and Companies Act depth on the other. A both-exams season is workable if you accept that each exam has one large block the other will not reward.
Both Sets of Figures Age the Same Way
Vacancies, pay and rules above are from each exam's 2024 notification, the last fully notified cycles in our data. Both regulators restate these per cycle; verify current numbers on sebi.gov.in and rbi.org.in before deciding on this table alone.
SEBI vs RBI FAQs
Which pays more, SEBI Grade A or RBI Grade B?expand_more
On entry gross, SEBI: about ₹1,49,500 per month (CTC ~₹22–24 LPA) against RBI's roughly ₹1.16 to 1.55 lakh per month on a ₹55,200 basic. RBI's figure varies more with posting and housing choice.
Which exam is harder?expand_more
Both are highly competitive, with under a hundred posts each in 2024. They are hard differently: RBI's descriptive-heavy three-paper Phase 2 versus SEBI's seven-subject Paper 2 carrying two-thirds weight. Which is harder for you depends on whether writing or subject width is your weaker side.
Can I prepare for SEBI Grade A and RBI Grade B together?expand_more
Yes, and many aspirants do. Aptitude sections and much of the finance and management material overlap. Budget separately for RBI's Economic & Social Issues and descriptive writing, and for SEBI's accounting, costing and Companies Act block.
Does a plain graduate qualify for both?expand_more
For RBI Grade B General, yes, with 60% marks. For SEBI's General stream, no; it needs a Master's, a Law or Engineering degree, or a professional qualification like CA or CFA.
