Fee and Attempt Rules That Catch People Out
- check_circleThere is no limit on attempts. You can sit the exam as many times as it takes.
- check_circleBut each attempt must be at least 21 days after the previous one. The payment link for the next booking reopens 24 hours after your earlier slot.
- check_circleNo refunds, for any reason, once the fee is paid.
- check_circleRescheduling is not a right. IBBI allows it once, for a genuine reason, and only if NSEIT receives the request at least 15 days before the exam date.
- check_circleOlder guides mention a two-month gap and a cap of six attempts a year. Those were the rules for the July 2023 series. The current gap is 21 days with no yearly cap.

How Long Your Pass Stays Valid
To register as an insolvency professional, you must have passed the exam within 24 months before you apply to enrol with an insolvency professional agency (IPA). That is regulation 5(a) of the IBBI (Insolvency Professionals) Regulations, 2016.
The window used to be 12 months. IBBI doubled it to 24 months by an amendment notified on 3 April 2025, so guides written before then understate it.
Miss the window and the pass cannot be used for enrolment: you would need to pass again. Plan the exam for when you already meet the experience rule, or are within 24 months of meeting it.
The Clocks After You Pass
Two deadlines run one after the other, so the whole route has a time limit.
- 1
Within 24 months of passing
Apply to enrol as a professional member of an IPA (IIIP of ICAI, ICSI IIP or IPA of ICMAI).
- 2
Apply to IBBI through your IPA
Regulation 6 sets a non-refundable application fee of ₹20,000, paid to IBBI with your application for registration, filed through the IPA you joined.
- 3
Within 12 months of paying that fee
Complete the 50-hour pre-registration educational course from your IPA, which regulation 5(b) requires.
