How to Prepare for IBPS RRB
The prelims is a 45-minute sprint on just two sections. Train for that first, then widen to five.
IBPS RRB preparation has an unusual shape: the prelims tests only two sections in 45 minutes, while the mains spreads across five. That split rewards a two-phase plan. Build reasoning and quant to sprint speed first, because the qualifying prelims is purely a pace test. Then widen into general awareness, your language section and computer knowledge, which together carry 100 of the 200 mains marks.
The other early decision is the language track. Mains offers English or Hindi, and the choice changes months of practice, so make it in the first weeks, on evidence, and stop revisiting it.

A Section-Wise Preparation Sequence
- 1
Weeks 1-2: baseline and the language decision
Attempt timed sets in both English and Hindi and keep the track with the higher net score. Take one honest two-section timed test to see your true prelims pace.
- 2
Weeks 3-8: reasoning and quant at sprint pace
The prelims allows about 34 seconds per question. Drill puzzles, seating, simplification and series against that clock, tracking net score with 0.25 negative marking. Start a daily current-affairs habit in parallel; general awareness cannot be crammed later.
- 3
Weeks 9-14: the five-section mains build
Add general awareness with its rural-banking slant, timed language-section practice, and computer knowledge. The mains is 2 hours across five sections, so endurance practice matters as much as topic coverage.
- 4
Final month: full mocks, alternating with review
Full-length timed mocks at real pace, each followed by an error review. For Office Assistant candidates the mains is the whole selection; officers should also bank 80% of merit here before thinking about the interview.
- 5
After mains (officers only): interview preparation
Scale I, II and III candidates face a 100-mark interview worth 20% of merit. Prepare rural banking themes, your state's RRB context and your own background once the written stage is done.
The Mistakes That Cost RRB Attempts
- check_circleTraining at 60-minute bank-exam pace. RRB prelims is 80 questions in 45 minutes; the pace difference fails candidates who prepared on other exams' clocks.
- check_circleTreating general awareness as generic banking GA. RRB's section leans on rural banking, RRBs and NABARD, and generic capsules leave those marks behind.
- check_circleIgnoring computer knowledge. Twenty bounded, learnable marks that many candidates simply never study.
- check_circleChoosing the language track by identity instead of evidence. The higher-scoring track wins, whatever your mother tongue.
- check_circleForgetting the language proficiency requirement. Exam marks cannot save a candidature that fails the state-language verification.
A plan built on a guess about your weak section is a guess.
How Long Does IBPS RRB Preparation Take?
The calendar gives a natural runway: notification lands June-August, prelims run November-December. Candidates starting with the notification get roughly three to four focused months, which is workable if the prelims pair reaches sprint pace early. Starting before the notification stretches the runway and moves the mains-only sections out of the panic zone.
Two Papers, One Preparation
Candidates applying for both Office Assistant and Officer Scale I do not need two plans. The sections are the same shape; train quant to Scale I's harder DI level and both papers are covered, with only the officer interview as extra work at the end.
Preparation FAQs
How many months are enough to prepare for IBPS RRB?expand_more
The notification-to-prelims runway is roughly three to four months (notification June-August, prelims November-December), and that is workable with focused daily study. Starting earlier moves general awareness and computer knowledge out of the last-minute crush.
Should I prepare differently for prelims and mains?expand_more
Yes, and in that order. Prelims is a 45-minute pace test on reasoning and quant only. Mains adds general awareness, the language section and computer knowledge, which together carry half its marks, so widen the plan once the sprint pair is solid.
When should I choose between English and Hindi?expand_more
In the first weeks. Attempt timed sets in both, keep the track with the higher net score, and bank all subsequent practice in it. Switching late wastes the section practice you have already done.
