About this career
A bank clerk — officially a Customer Service Associate — is the front-line face of a public-sector bank branch, handling cash, account opening, passbook updates, clearing and everyday customer queries. It is one of the most accessible government-sector jobs: any graduate can apply, and selection is through the IBPS Clerk or SBI Clerk exam (a Preliminary plus a Mains, with no interview for most PSBs). The clerical cadre offers excellent job security, fixed working hours and a defined pay scale, and it is a proven springboard: clerks can rise to officer grade through internal promotion exams or by clearing IBPS/SBI PO externally, and completing the IIBF's JAIIB and CAIIB speeds that transition. Many senior bank managers began their careers at the clerk's counter.
