A Probationary Officer (PO) is the entry-level managerial cadre at India's public-sector banks (PSBs) such as SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank. Unlike private-sector hiring, entry is purely merit-based through national recruitment exams — you cannot join as a PO without clearing IBPS PO (a common exam feeding 11+ banks) or SBI PO. Selection runs across a Preliminary exam, a Mains exam and an interview, with SBI adding a descriptive paper and group exercise. Once selected you serve a two-year probation rotating through retail lending, branch operations, forex and treasury, and the bank sponsors the IIBF's JAIIB and CAIIB certifications, which carry pay increments and accelerate promotion. A PO is on the officer ladder from day one — Scale I → II → III and upward — with strong job security, pension benefits, and a clear route to branch, regional and zonal leadership.
