CFA Eligibility and Registration
Three routes in: a completed degree, a final-year seat, or 4,000 hours of experience. No age bar on any of them.
CFA eligibility has three routes, and you need only one of them: a completed bachelor's degree, being in the final year of a bachelor's program, or 4,000 hours of relevant work or education experience. There is no age limit, and the program is open to Indian candidates registering directly with CFA Institute.
The experience route is the one most people don't know exists. A candidate without a degree can still enter the program on accumulated professional experience, which makes the CFA more open than its reputation suggests.
The Three Entry Routes
- Completed bachelor's degree
- Any discipline. A finance background is not required to register.
- Final-year student
- You may register while in the final year of a bachelor's program, before the degree is awarded.
- 4,000 hours of experience
- Relevant work and/or education experience totalling 4,000 hours qualifies you to register without a completed degree.
Registration, Practically
Registration happens directly with CFA Institute, level by level, starting with Level I. Because the levels are sequential and the full program typically runs 2-4 years, your first registration decision is really a multi-year commitment decision: the sensible check before paying is whether your next several months can absorb sustained study, not just whether you clear the eligibility bar.
Note the distinction the program draws between entering and finishing. Eligibility gets you a seat at Level I. The charter at the far end requires passing all three levels, 4,000 hours of qualified work experience, and CFA Institute membership.
See the question style before you register.
Fees and Deadlines: Confirm with CFA Institute
