Credit Score and CIBIL Explained
Lenders report, credit bureaus record. Here's how a missed EMI shows up, and how wrong entries get fixed.
A credit score is a three-digit number that sums up how a person has handled loans and credit cards. It is calculated by a credit information company (CIC) from the repayment data that banks and NBFCs send it. TransUnion CIBIL is the best-known CIC, which is why people say "CIBIL score". Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark are other examples.
Lenders check this report before giving any new loan. That is why a borrower 95 days overdue on a two-wheeler loan often worries more about their CIBIL than about the bike. As a recovery agent, you must explain this honestly, without promises or threats.

Key Terms
- Credit information company (CIC)
- A company registered with RBI under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005, that collects credit data and issues credit reports and scores.
- Credit institution (CI)
- A bank, NBFC or other lender that reports data to CICs. The Act requires credit institutions to be members of a CIC.
- Credit information report (CIR)
- The detailed record: every loan and card, the amounts, repayment history and any defaults.
- Days past due (DPD)
- How many days a payment is late. Lenders report DPD for each account, and it is a major input to the score.
How a Missed EMI Reaches the Report
Since 1 July 2026, under RBI's Credit Information Reporting Directions, lenders report data as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of every month. The full monthly file is due by the 5th of the next month, and the in-between updates within four calendar days. So a missed EMI, and a payment that clears it, both show up within days, not months.
When a lender reports a default or days past due on an existing loan, it must send the customer an SMS or email alert where it has the contact details. CICs must also alert customers when a lender pulls their report.
Credit cards have one extra rule: a card account can be reported as past due only after it stays past due for more than three days from the due date, and if the dues are settled later, the card issuer must update the CIC within 30 days.
Borrower Rights on Credit Reports
| Right | What RBI requires |
|---|---|
| Free full credit report | Each CIC must give an individual one free full credit report, including the score, once every calendar year, through a link on its home page. |
| Correction of wrong data | The lender and CIC together have 30 days to fix a complaint: the lender gets 21 days to send corrected data, the CIC the rest. |
| Compensation for delay | ₹100 for every calendar day beyond 30 days, credited within five working days of resolution. |
| Reasons for rejection | If a correction request is rejected, the customer must be told why. |
| Escalation | If compensation is wrongly denied, the customer can approach the RBI Ombudsman. |

What an Agent Must Not Say
You cannot change anyone's credit report. Only the lender reports data, and only the lender and CIC can correct it. So never promise "pay me today and your CIBIL will be clean", and never threaten "your CIBIL is finished for life". Both are misleading. The honest message: paying the overdue amount stops further days past due being reported, and the lender will report the updated status.
How the DRA Exam Tests This
Expect questions on the law ("CICs are regulated under which Act?": the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005), on who reports (lenders, not the CIC itself, create the repayment data) and on borrower rights (free report once a year, 30-day correction, ₹100 a day compensation). The trap: thinking the CIC decides whether a loan is in default. It only records what lenders report.
FAQs
How soon does a missed EMI show on my CIBIL report?expand_more
Lenders now report as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month, so a missed EMI can appear within days. You should also get an SMS or email when the lender reports a default.
Can a recovery agent remove a default from my CIBIL?expand_more
No. Only the lender reports data to the CIC, and only the lender and CIC can correct it. An agent who promises this is misleading you.
How do I correct a wrong entry in my credit report?expand_more
Raise a complaint with the CIC or the lender. They have 30 days to resolve it. After that, you are owed ₹100 for each day of delay.
Can I get my credit report for free?expand_more
Yes. Every CIC must give you one free full credit report, including your score, every calendar year.
