POSP vs IC-38: The Real Differences
One takes 15 hours, the other up to 75. The catch is in what each lets you sell.
Choose POSP if you want to start selling insurance quickly, part-time or alongside other work: 15 hours of online training, one short exam, and a shelf of standardised products. Choose IC-38 if you want insurance selling as a full profession: 50 to 75 hours of training and a formal exam, in exchange for the right to sell and tailor the entire product range.
That is the verdict. The rest of this page is the evidence, because the two routes differ on more than training hours, and the differences that matter most show up after certification, not before it.

The Product Boundary Is the Real Difference
Everything else on the table is a one-time cost difference; the product boundary is permanent. A POSP sells only pre-underwritten, standardised plans with pre-defined benefits: motor, personal accident, travel, simple term and health covers. Nothing can be customised, which also means nothing complex can be sold.
An IC-38 agent sells the full range, including plans that are structured to a client's situation. That is where larger premiums, and therefore larger commissions, live. It is also why IC-38 demands three to five times the training: the products carry more ways to advise badly.
Choose POSP If
- check_circleYou want income moving within days, not weeks of classroom-grade preparation.
- check_circleThis is a side income next to studies, home responsibilities or another job.
- check_circleYou have a Class 10th qualification and the IC-38 urban education bar is a hurdle.
- check_circleYou would rather test the insurance-selling life cheaply before committing to it.
Whichever route you pick, see the question style first.
Choose IC-38 If
- check_circleInsurance selling is the career, not the experiment.
- check_circleYou want to advise on and sell customised plans, where premiums and commissions run higher.
- check_circleYou are building a long-term client book where renewal commissions compound.
- check_circleYou are ready for 50 to 75 hours of training and a formal III exam now.
This Is a Ladder, Not a Fork
The most common path is both, in order: start as a POSP, learn to sell with real customers, then clear IC-38 and upgrade to the full agent licence. Nothing about the POSP route blocks the IC-38 route later, and the field experience makes the IC-38 material easier to absorb.
What the Two Exams Feel Like
The POSP exam tests the 15-hour training content: insurance basics, POS products, IRDAI conduct rules and sales practice, typically as a short online MCQ test. IC-38 is a formal 50-question, 1-hour paper with a 35% pass mark, sat at an authorised test centre after the training hours are logged.
Neither is a hard exam by competitive-exam standards. Both are failed regularly by people who skipped the compliance material. Whichever you choose, practise questions before booking; the free practice above needs no signup.
