NISM Series V-A: Frequently Asked Questions
Fee, validity, negative marking, re-attempts and renewal: the questions candidates actually ask.
The questions candidates ask most about Series V-A, answered in one line each where one line is honest. Where a question needs more than that, it links to the page that covers it properly rather than restating half of it here.
The exam itself
What is the passing score for NISM Series V-A?expand_more
50 out of 100 marks (50%). That is the lowest pass mark in the NISM range: most other series, including VIII, X-A, X-B and XV, require 60%.
How long is the NISM Series V-A exam?expand_more
2 hours (120 minutes) for a 100-mark objective, computer-based paper. The result is displayed on screen as soon as you submit.
Does NISM Series V-A have negative marking?expand_more
No. NISM states there is no negative marking for Series V-A, so a wrong answer costs you nothing beyond the mark you would have earned. Answer every question: leaving one blank can only lose you marks.
How many questions are in the paper?expand_more
The paper is worth 100 marks in total. Confirm the exact question count and mark distribution in the current NISM workbook, as the split can be revised between editions.
Is NISM Series V-A difficult?expand_more
It is the most-passed NISM certification, with a reported pass rate around 85%, and it is broad rather than deep. The material is procedural and detail-heavy, so the usual failure is forgetting a cut-off timing rather than misunderstanding a concept.
Fees, validity and renewal
What is the NISM Series V-A exam fee?expand_more
₹1,500 plus applicable GST, payable online at the time of booking. The fee applies per attempt.
How long is NISM Series V-A valid?expand_more
3 years from the date of passing. To stay certified you either pass the exam again or complete the CPE programme (10 CPE credit hours) before it expires.
What happens if my certificate expires?expand_more
You lose the option to renew via CPE and have to sit the full exam again. Book your CPE before the expiry date rather than after it.
How many times can I attempt the exam?expand_more
There is no cap on attempts and no mandatory waiting period between them beyond booking another slot. Each attempt is a fresh registration at the full fee.

Registration and the ARN
When is the next NISM Series V-A exam date?expand_more
There isn't one. NISM certification exams run on demand throughout the year: you register, choose a test centre and pick your own slot, typically within a week or two.
Does passing V-A give me an ARN?expand_more
No. V-A is a prerequisite for an ARN, not the ARN itself. After passing you apply to AMFI separately, complete KYD formalities and pay AMFI's own fee.
What is the difference between Series V-A, V-B and V-C?expand_more
V-A is the full Mutual Fund Distributors certification required for an ARN. V-B (Mutual Fund Foundation) is a shorter 50-mark foundation paper and does not substitute for V-A on an ARN application. V-C is the CPE route used to renew an existing certification.
Do I need a degree or work experience to take it?expand_more
No. NISM sets no minimum education, no prior experience requirement and no prerequisite certification for Series V-A. Anyone can register.
