NISM Series X-A Eligibility: Who Needs It?
NISM certifications have no degree requirement. What matters is the role you hold. Here is who Series X-A is mandatory for.
Anyone can register for NISM Series X-A. The exam itself has no minimum educational qualification, no age limit and no work-experience requirement. If you want to test yourself against the Investment Adviser (Level 1) syllabus tomorrow, nothing stops you.
The confusion around X-A eligibility comes from what the exam is FOR. X-A is the first of two exams SEBI mandates for Investment Adviser registration under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013, and registration carries requirements the exam does not: Series X-B as well, plus qualification, experience and net worth conditions. Passing X-A is step one of that path, not the whole path.
Who needs Series X-A
The certification is required for:
- checkAnyone starting the SEBI Investment Adviser (IA) registration path; X-A must be cleared before you can sit Series X-B
- checkThe principal officer of a non-individual (corporate) IA applicant
- checkPersons associated with investment advice at a non-individual IA
- checkIFAs and wealth professionals planning a move to a fee-only advisory model
Sitting the exam vs registering with SEBI
Two different bars. The left column is all the exam asks; the right is what full IA registration involves:
| Taking the X-A exam | SEBI IA registration |
|---|---|
| Open to anyone, no minimum qualification | Prescribed qualification or a graduate degree with relevant experience |
| No prior certification needed | Both Series X-A and Series X-B passed, X-A first |
| No net worth requirement | ₹5 lakh net worth for individuals, ₹50 lakh for non-individuals |
| Register on the NISM portal, book a slot | Application to SEBI after the NISM requirements are met |
Free account, this exam preselected.
Registration conditions are SEBI's, revised through circulars and amendments, and the summary above is not a substitute for the current regulations. Confirm the qualification, experience and net worth requirements on SEBI's website before you plan a registration timeline around them.
Taking X-A without pursuing registration
Plenty of candidates sit X-A with no intention of registering as an adviser. The syllabus is a compact course in personal financial planning, investment products and portfolio construction, and wealth management employers read the certificate as proof of exactly that. Students and relationship managers use it this way routinely. Since the exam is open to all, that is a perfectly legitimate reason to take it.
Eligibility questions
Is there a minimum qualification for the NISM Series X-A exam?expand_more
No. The exam itself is open to anyone, with no minimum educational qualification or experience requirement. Qualification requirements apply later, at the SEBI Investment Adviser registration stage, not at the exam.
Is passing X-A alone enough to become a Registered Investment Adviser?expand_more
No. X-A is Level 1 only. You must also pass Series X-B (Level 2), and X-A must be cleared first. After both, SEBI IA registration additionally requires the prescribed qualification, experience and net worth (₹5 lakh for individuals, ₹50 lakh for non-individuals).
Do I need to take Series X-A before Series X-B?expand_more

Can students take NISM Series X-A?expand_more
Yes. There is no eligibility bar on the exam, and students preparing for wealth management and advisory careers commonly take it before graduating.
