NISM Series XXI-A Certificate Renewal and CPE
Your XXI-A certificate lasts 3 years. Renew it through CPE in the final 12 months, or sit the exam again.
A NISM Series XXI-A certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of the examination. To keep it alive you do not resit the exam. You complete NISM's XXI-A Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme in the 12 months before the certificate expires, and NISM revalidates it for another 3 years from the expiry date.
This matters because SEBI requires a PMS distributor to hold the certification. A distributor whose certificate lapses no longer meets that requirement until they are certified again, and the portfolio managers they work with are expected to check.

Renewing an unexpired certificate
- 1
Wait for the 12-month window
You may attend CPE only in the 12 months before your certificate's expiry date, not earlier. NISM suggests enrolling at least six months before expiry, because seats are limited and late requests may not succeed.
- 2
Choose classroom CPE or online eCPE
Classroom CPE runs for one day, about six hours, through NISM-accredited providers, with a test at the end. eCPE is the online version; you book a slot, and your login works for two calendar days from the scheduled time to finish the programme and its assessment test.
- 3
Upload your documents
General category candidates upload a copy of their valid XXI-A certificate when enrolling. Classroom candidates also carry the originals to the venue.
- 4
Complete the programme and the test
Attendance alone is not enough. The certificate is issued only after you complete every requirement and NISM verifies your documents. NISM's FAQ says it is emailed within 21 working days of that.
A worked timeline
An RM who passed XXI-A on November 20, 2023:
| Event | When |
|---|---|
| Certificate valid until | About November 2026 (3 years from the exam date) |
| CPE window opens | About November 2025 |
| Sensible time to enrol | By about May 2026, six months before expiry |
| Renewed certificate valid until | About November 2029 (3 years from the old expiry, not from the CPE date) |
Once it expires, CPE is closed to you
A General category holder whose certificate has expired cannot renew through CPE. NISM requires them to pass the XXI-A exam again to get a new certificate. Note your expiry date the day you pass.

The Principal and Grandfather categories
Three groups can get a XXI-A certificate through CPE without having passed the exam:
- Principal
- A proprietor, partner, chairman, director, whole-time director or CEO actively engaged in managing a SEBI-registered portfolio manager. Documents include proof of designation and the portfolio manager's SEBI registration certificate.
- Grandfather by Age
- An associated person, other than a Principal, who had completed 50 years of age as on September 7, 2021.
- Grandfather by Experience
- An associated person, other than a Principal, currently working as a distributor of SEBI-registered PMS, with 10 or more years of relevant experience as on September 7, 2021. Documents include proof of experience in NISM's format.
- General
- Everyone else. Anyone already holding a valid XXI-A certificate is General category, whatever their age, designation or experience.
How XXI-A tests this
Renewal sits outside the 12 chapters, so it rarely appears as a question. Where it does, it is a one-fact item: the certificate lasts 3 years, CPE is allowed only in the 12 months before expiry, and the September 7, 2021 date anchors both the SEBI mandate and the Grandfather categories. The usual slip is assuming the renewed certificate runs from the CPE date; for a renewal, NISM counts 3 years from the old expiry date.
