The three ways to qualify for Level I
The CFA Institute keeps eligibility deliberately broad. To register for Level I, you must satisfy one of three pathways. You do not need a finance degree, and there is no minimum age or mandatory subject.
| Pathway | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Graduate | Hold a completed bachelor's degree in any discipline |
| Final-year student | Be within about 11 months of graduation when you sit the exam |
| Work + education | A combination of professional work and higher education totalling 4,000+ hours |
These rules apply to registering for Level I only. To progress to Level II you must have completed your degree, and to earn the charter you must complete the full work experience requirement of 4,000 qualified hours.
The bachelor's degree route
The most common pathway is holding a completed bachelor's degree in any subject. Your degree does not have to be in finance, commerce or economics. Engineering, science, arts and commerce graduates are all eligible. If your degree is complete before you sit Level I, you qualify under this route.
The final-year student route
You do not have to wait until you graduate. If you are a final-year student within roughly 11 months of graduation at the time of your exam, you can sit Level I. This lets ambitious students get a head start, and it is a popular route in India. Just make sure your exam window falls within the eligible period relative to your graduation date. For guidance on timing, see our page for students and freshers.
The work and education combination
If you do not have a completed degree, you may still qualify through a combination of professional work experience and higher education totalling 4,000 hours or more. The hours must be accrued in a way the CFA Institute accepts, so review the exact rules before relying on this route. It is a useful pathway for those who entered the workforce early.
The passport requirement
Every candidate must hold a valid international passport to register for and sit the CFA exam. This applies to all pathways and is strictly enforced as the accepted form of identification at the test centre. If you do not yet have a passport, apply well ahead of your intended exam date, as processing can take time in India.
India-specific notes
For Indian candidates, a few practical points matter:
- Your bachelor's degree from any recognised Indian university qualifies under the graduate route.
- Final-year students in three or four-year degree programmes can use the student route, subject to the ~11-month rule.
- The passport is the only accepted ID, so an Aadhaar or PAN card will not suffice at the test centre.
- Eligible candidates may apply for CFA Institute scholarships, which can sharply reduce fees.
