IRDAI Assistant Manager Streams Explained
Six streams, one exam. The Generalist stream takes any degree and carries the most posts; the other five want a specialist qualification.
IRDAI recruits Assistant Managers across six streams: Generalist, Actuarial, Finance, Law, IT and Research. The Generalist stream accepts any bachelor's degree and usually carries the most vacancies; in the 2024 cycle, 24 of the 49 posts were Generalist. The other five streams each require a matching specialist qualification.
You choose your stream when you apply, and the choice is final for that cycle. Phase I is common to every stream, but the Phase II Insurance and Management paper is oriented to your stream, so the choice decides what depth you will be examined at.

How to Decide Between Generalist and a Specialist Stream
If you hold a specialist qualification, the calculation is about competition and comfort. A specialist stream has fewer seats but a much smaller eligible pool, and its Phase II paper rewards the subject you already know. The Generalist stream has the most seats but draws every graduate in the country who clears the 60% bar.
If your only qualification is a bachelor's degree, the decision is made for you: Generalist is the stream you can enter.
Phase I is common to every stream. Start there.
