How to Prepare for SEBI Grade A
Paper 2 carries two-thirds of the deciding phase. Build the plan around it, not around aptitude.
SEBI Grade A preparation has one organising rule: give Paper 2 the majority of your hours. It carries two-thirds of Phase 2's weight, and Phase 2 is 85% of final selection, yet most candidates spend most of their time on the familiar aptitude material of Paper 1. Rank movement lives in that mismatch.
For the General stream, Paper 2 means seven subject areas, Commerce through Economics, wide enough that coverage collapses near the exam unless it is structured early. The plan below is built around that risk.

A Paper-2-First Preparation Plan
- 1
Take a diagnostic before you plan
A timed test across both papers shows where you actually stand, subject by subject. Plans built without one systematically overweight the subjects you already like.
- 2
Fix Paper 2's share of the week first
Assign the majority of study hours to the stream subjects and protect that share. Rotate through all seven General-stream areas on a schedule rather than by mood, or wide coverage quietly narrows to three comfortable subjects.
- 3
Keep Paper 1 warm with short drills
Reasoning, quant and English respond to frequent short practice. Twenty focused minutes daily maintains Phase 1 readiness without eating Paper 2's time.
- 4
Read the securities market daily
Paper 1's General Awareness section covers the securities market explicitly, and the same material feeds Paper 2's finance areas and the interview. One habit, three payoffs.
- 5
Practise descriptive English weekly
Phase 2's Paper 1 is typed essay, precis and comprehension carrying one-third of the phase's weight. Weekly timed writing is enough to stop it from costing you rank; zero practice is not.
- 6
Move to full mocks and let the scores steer
As the notification approaches, switch to full timed papers with negative marking, and re-point each week's revision at whatever the last mock exposed.
Train for Phase 1's Formats, Not Just Its Content
Phase 1's Paper 2 gives you 50 stream questions in 40 minutes; Paper 1 gives four sections in 60 minutes; both carry one-fourth negative marking with sectional and aggregate cut-offs. Knowing the subjects is necessary and insufficient. The speed, the leave-it discipline on doubtful questions, and section-level pacing only come from practising under the real constraints.
A plan built on a guess about your weak area is a guess.
The Phase Gap Is Revision, Not Preparation
In 2024, Phase 1 ran on 27 July and Phase 2 on 31 August, with the Phase 1 result on 7 August in between. Whatever Phase 2 depth you have by Phase 1 day is roughly what you will sit Phase 2 with. Plan as if the two phases were one exam.
SEBI Grade A Preparation FAQs
What should I prioritise in SEBI Grade A preparation?expand_more
Paper 2, the stream-specific paper. It carries two-thirds of Phase 2's weight, and Phase 2 is 85% of final selection. Keep Paper 1 aptitude warm with short daily drills alongside.
Should I prepare Phase 1 and Phase 2 separately?expand_more
No. The 2024 gap between phases was about five weeks including the result wait. The subjects are the same across phases, so prepare once to Phase 2 depth.
How do I handle the descriptive English paper?expand_more
With a weekly habit of typed, timed essays and precis. It carries one-third of Phase 2's weight, and it rewards practice over talent; candidates who clear the objective cut-offs still lose rank here when unpractised.
