IBBI Valuation Exam Pattern and Passing Marks
100 marks, 2 hours, 60 to pass, and every wrong answer costs a quarter of its marks.
The IBBI Registered Valuer exam is a 2-hour online paper of objective multiple-choice questions, marked out of 100. You need 60% to pass, and every wrong answer costs 25% of the marks that question carries. The format is the same for Land and Building, Securities or Financial Assets and Plant and Machinery; only the syllabus changes.
IBBI's FAQ puts the paper at 87 questions: 74 worth 1 mark and 13 worth 2 marks. All 13 two-mark questions sit inside three case studies, which together carry 26 marks.

How the Scoring Works
- Answer every question
- IBBI's format says a candidate is required to answer all questions, and an unattempted question scores zero.
- Negative marking
- A wrong answer loses 25% of that question's marks. Four wrong answers cancel out one right one, so a blind guess gains very little; a guess after ruling out options is worth far more.
- Case-study questions
- Each case opens with a passage narrating a transaction. The platform shows a case as one grouped item, so the on-screen question count looks lower than 87, which IBBI's FAQ explains.
- Unique papers
- Every paper is drawn by the system from IBBI's question bank, so no two candidates see the same set.

Why the Pass Rate Is So Low
A 60% bar with negative marking is unforgiving. If you answer every question and get 30 one-mark questions wrong, you lose 7.5 marks on top of the 30 you missed. Candidates who know the subject still fail by guessing on questions they half-know.
The case studies add a second trap: they are computation-heavy, the two-mark questions double the penalty, and one misread fact in a case passage can cost several linked answers at once.
