How to Prepare for CAIIB
Most failed attempts die on ABM and BFM numericals, not on theory. A working banker's plan has to start from that fact.
CAIIB preparation is a scheduling problem before it is a study problem. Five 100-question papers, two exam cycles a year, and evenings that start after branch hours. The candidates who clear it plan which papers to sit in which cycle, then prepare a small number of papers properly instead of all five thinly.
The plan below assumes you are working full time and using the carry-forward rule deliberately.

How Long Does CAIIB Preparation Take?
Plan around one exam cycle, roughly three to four months, for two to three papers prepared properly alongside a bank job. The papers differ sharply in load: ABM and BFM carry numerical content that needs worked practice over weeks, while BRBL and ABFM reward steady reading and revision. Budget hours by paper type, not equally.
A Cycle-by-Cycle Plan
One realistic route through the five papers using the carry-forward rule.
- 1
Pick this cycle's papers before you start studying
Two or three papers per cycle is the common working-banker split. Pair one numerical paper (ABM or BFM) with one reading paper (BRBL or ABFM) so the load varies.
- 2
Read a chapter, then drill it the same week
Retrieval beats re-reading. Follow each courseware chapter with questions on that chapter while it is fresh, and log which topics leak marks.
- 3
Give numericals their own sessions
ABM statistics and BFM forex, treasury and risk calculations need worked solutions repeated until the method is automatic, not recognised.
- 4
Start timed papers in the final month
Full 100-question, 2-hour papers, scored against the 50-mark pass line. Pace is a trained skill; the first timed paper is always slower than expected.
- 5
Bank your passes, then repeat
Cleared papers carry forward within your block. Next cycle, prepare only what remains, and keep a buffer cycle before the 3-year deadline.
A plan built on a guess about your weak paper is a guess.
Where CAIIB Attempts Actually Fail
- check_circleBFM and ABM numericals attempted from memory of the method rather than practised execution.
- check_circleAll five papers attempted at once with a fortnight of preparation each.
- check_circleOld-scheme notes for ABFM and BRBL, which cover the wrong structure in places.
- check_circleNo timed practice, so the real paper is the first time pace is ever tested.
- check_circleIgnoring the block clock and leaving no cycle spare for a re-attempt.
The Aggregate Route Is Not a Plan
Clearing via 45-per-paper plus a 250/500 aggregate only works in a single sitting of all papers. It rescues strong candidates on a weak day; it is not a strategy to aim for. Plan for 50 per paper.
FAQs
Can I clear CAIIB in one attempt while working?expand_more
Candidates do, but the reliable pattern for working bankers is two to three well-prepared papers per cycle using carry-forward, rather than all five at once.
Which paper should I prepare first?expand_more
Start with one numerical paper, ABM or BFM, because those need the longest runway, and pair it with a reading paper like BRBL so your evenings alternate load.
When should I start timed practice?expand_more
Chapter-level questions from week one, full timed 100-question papers in the final month before your cycle.
