CAIIB Syllabus: 4 Compulsory Papers, 5 Electives
Five papers stand between you and the certificate. Here is what each one actually covers.
The CAIIB syllabus under the revised 2023 scheme has five papers: four compulsory and one elective you choose from five options. The compulsory papers are Advanced Bank Management (ABM), Bank Financial Management (BFM), Advanced Business & Financial Management (ABFM) and Banking Regulations & Business Laws (BRBL). Each paper runs 100 questions for 100 marks in 2 hours.
This page walks through what each paper covers. For how the papers are scored and cleared, see the exam pattern page; for choosing between the five electives, there is a dedicated elective page.

What Is the CAIIB Syllabus?
The CAIIB syllabus is the topic list for IIBF's advanced banking certification: four compulsory papers covering bank management, financial and risk management, business and financial strategy, and banking law, plus one elective paper chosen from Rural Banking, Human Resources Management, IT & Digital Banking, Risk Management or Central Banking.
It builds directly on JAIIB. Where JAIIB tests foundations, CAIIB assumes them and tests application: credit appraisal rather than credit definitions, Basel III rather than what a bank balance sheet is.
The Four Compulsory Papers
One line on what each paper is really about, before the topic lists below.
- Advanced Bank Management (ABM)
- The management paper: statistics and quantitative analysis for bankers, human resource management, credit management from appraisal to monitoring, and compliance, governance and fraud vigilance.
- Bank Financial Management (BFM)
- The heaviest numerical paper: international banking and forex, risk management frameworks, treasury management and derivatives, and balance sheet management under Basel III.
- Advanced Business & Financial Management (ABFM)
- The strategy paper: management and financial management, business valuation and M&A, corporate finance and private equity, plus emerging areas like AI, green finance and fintech.
- Banking Regulations & Business Laws (BRBL)
- The law paper: RBI guidelines and banking regulation, the NI Act, PMLA and Contract Act, SARFAESI, IBC and debt recovery, and the business laws that touch banking.

Studying From Old-Scheme Notes Is the Classic Trap
ABFM and BRBL are structured differently under the revised 2023 scheme than the papers they replaced. Notes and question banks built for the old papers cover the wrong ground in places. Check that anything you study names the revised papers: ABM, BFM, ABFM, BRBL.
Verify Against the Current IIBF Announcement
IIBF revises courseware and syllabus details between cycles. Before a serious study plan, confirm the current paper structure and topic list on IIBF's own CAIIB page.
FAQs
How many papers does CAIIB have?expand_more
Five: four compulsory papers (ABM, BFM, ABFM and BRBL) plus one elective chosen from Rural Banking, HRM, IT & Digital Banking, Risk Management or Central Banking.
Which CAIIB paper is the hardest?expand_more
Most candidates find BFM and ABM hardest because of their numerical content: risk, forex, treasury and credit calculations. Worked practice moves those scores more than re-reading.
Did the CAIIB syllabus change?expand_more
Yes. The revised 2023 scheme restructured CAIIB into ABM, BFM, ABFM and BRBL plus an elective. Material built for the older papers no longer matches the structure.
Is the elective syllabus the same size as a compulsory paper?expand_more
Each elective is a full paper of its own: 100 questions for 100 marks in 2 hours, the same format as the compulsory papers.
