How to Prepare for SSC CHSL
Tier 1 gives you a minute a question. Preparation that ignores the clock prepares you for a different exam.
CHSL preparation has one organising fact: Tier 1 gives you 100 questions in 60 minutes. A minute per question, at 2 marks each. Candidates who prepare topic depth without clock discipline arrive knowing everything and finishing nothing.
So this plan trains speed and knowledge together, weights English for the Tier 2 payoff, and runs typing practice in parallel for the skill-test posts.

The CHSL Preparation Strategy in 4 Moves
- 1
Build Tier 1 speed deliberately
Prioritise Reasoning (the fastest section to score) and English (moderate pace) over Quant on each pass. Skip calculation-heavy Quant questions on first pass and return with the time you saved. Practise this triage in every mock, not just on exam day.
- 2
Make English the long-game subject
Tier 2 English is worth 120 marks, more than any other section. Grammar rules, comprehension and vocabulary compound slowly, so 30 minutes of daily English newspaper reading from month one is worth more than a final-month blitz.
- 3
Build GK from standard sources only
One standard GK compilation read properly, plus the last 6 months of current affairs from a reliable daily source. CHSL GK runs roughly 60% static and 40% current, so the static read is the bigger half of the work.
- 4
Run typing practice in parallel if you want PA, SA or DEO
35 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi for LDC/PA/SA, 8,000 key depressions per hour for DEO. Twenty minutes daily on the official test interface format, starting now, is the whole trick.
The Weekly Rhythm
- check_circleDaily: one timed sectional set, alternating subjects, plus English reading and a current-affairs pass
- check_circleWeekly: one full Tier 1 mock under exam timing, followed by an hour of wrong-answer analysis
- check_circleAn error log by chapter, reviewed on Sundays, so revision targets your actual weaknesses
- check_circleFrom the Tier 1 result onward: shift the weight to Tier 2's English and Quant depth
A plan built on a guess about your weak subject is a guess.
The Minute-per-Question Rule Is a Training Setting
Set your practice timer to Tier 1 conditions from the very first mock: 100 questions, 60 minutes. Untimed practice builds knowledge; only timed practice builds the exam skill CHSL actually tests.
SSC CHSL Preparation FAQs
How much time does SSC CHSL preparation need?expand_more
The syllabus sits at Class 12 level, so a few months of consistent, timed practice covers it for most candidates. The differentiators are Tier 1 speed and Tier 2 English depth, both built through daily routine rather than long study days.
Which section should I attempt first in Tier 1?expand_more
A common, effective order: Reasoning first (fastest marks), then English, then General Awareness, with Quant's heavier questions saved for the time that remains.
Is coaching necessary for SSC CHSL?expand_more
No. Standard GK sources, previous year papers, daily English reading and weekly timed mocks cover the preparation. Coaching adds structure for some candidates but no exclusive content.
