SSC CHSL Typing Test: The Speeds You Must Hit
Clearing both tiers means nothing if your fingers miss the speed bar. The requirements, post by post.
Every year, candidates clear both CHSL tiers and then stall at the last stage: a typing test their preparation never included. For LDC, PA, SA and DEO posts the skill stage is mandatory, and no written score compensates for fingers that miss the speed bar.
The requirements are specific, measurable and trainable. Here they are, post by post, with a training approach that works alongside CBT preparation instead of after it.

What Speed Does the SSC CHSL Typing Test Require?
LDC, PA and SA candidates must type 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. DEO candidates face a data-entry standard instead: 8,000 key depressions per hour. The test is qualifying; you clear the bar or you do not.
Speed Requirements by Post
| Post | Requirement |
|---|---|
| LDC / JSA | 35 WPM (English) or 30 WPM (Hindi) |
| Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant | 35 WPM (English) or 30 WPM (Hindi) |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | 8,000 key depressions per hour |
What 8,000 Key Depressions per Hour Actually Means
Key depressions count every keystroke, not every word. Averaged out, 8,000 depressions per hour is a shade over 2 keystrokes per second, sustained for the full test duration. It sounds modest until you add the real constraint: accuracy. Errors cost you, and typing fast with corrections is slower than typing slightly slower without them.
The CBT comes before the typing test. Keep both sharp.
How to Train for the Typing Stage
- checkStart typing practice during CBT preparation, not after the Tier 2 result; speed is a months-scale skill
- checkPractice on SSC's official test interface format so the layout holds no surprises on test day
- checkTrain accuracy before speed: a clean 30 WPM improves to 35 faster than a sloppy 40 comes down to accurate
- checkPick your language deliberately; if your Hindi typing is stronger, the 30 WPM Hindi bar may be the easier clear
- checkDo short daily sessions over long weekly ones; 20 focused minutes daily beats a two-hour Sunday slog
Skipping Typing Practice Is the Classic CHSL Mistake
If you are targeting PA, SA or DEO, treat typing as a parallel subject from day one. The written tiers take most of a year; the typing test then arrives with no room left to build a physical skill from scratch.
